new psd owner here

Hi, everyone my name is Alan.

I am now the proud owner of a 1996 F-250xl 2WD utility truck.
(I will post pics soon)

The truck has 249000 on it, and to start off with i need to either have to replace some injectors or replace some o-rings. Next i will replace all fluids, (if you guys would recommend anything let me know) then put a long box on it.

I would like to eventually convert it to 4WD, and do a military style build.

I would also like to mention that this has to be the greatest/friendliest ford forum there is. I hope I can learn and then provide great information on here.

I'm from the Lexington, Indiana area. Now i will put my son back to bed.

It has a knock and it smokes quite a bit until its warm and also has a bad miss only when accelerating. the knock noise only happens when revving it or driving it, not at idle.

Yea I'm not to far out. lol. I would like to learn all i can about These engines. I used to have a 1980 f250 custom 4X4. I rebuilt the engine, and got a rebuilt trans and transfer. It had a 351W in it. I loved that truck and miss it. This is my first venture into diesels. I actually started out here on the bullnose section. Now im in the diesel OBS group.

Welcome to the PSD side, Alan. You've got some good neighbors there. ^^

I think they're steering you in the right direction with checking the fuel pressure first. I would also recommend (as Glenn did) that you do a complete flush/fill on the fluids. You never know how long it may have been since the last one, unless you have maintenance records from the PO. Maintenance is key with these diesels, but if you take care of them, they'll take care of you.

Well I did not get a chance to check the furl pressure today. But I would like to ask you guys what brands of oil, coolant, filters, etc. that you use or would recommend I use.Generally only use certain brands of products. I'm a very meticulous owner. I also get a pretty good discount as one of my jobs is a parts salesmen at advance auto. So I'm pretty familer with most brands. Just wanting some input/advice?

I use Shell Rotella T 15W40 for the engine oil, Prestone for the coolant, though there are many who will recommend you use Fleetcharge coolant as well, For filter, I use Motorcraft (oil and fuel) and a NAPA 6637 air filter (that won't help you though if you work at Advance!!). You'll also be well off to run a diesel additive like Power Service to add some lubricity back into the fuel as well. I'm sure others will chime in with their recommendations.
