Smartphone OBD reader

I bought one of the ELM OBD Bluetooth adaptors off of Ebay to give it a try. It came in yesterday. I put it in today, paired it with my smartphone, dowloaded Torque from the app market, set up Torque and everything works like a charm.

I was even able to download the Ford supplement to Torque which (once it knows it is a Powerstroke) selects the parts of the OBD reading that it can use.

I even know the FICM voltage now (47.5 to 48 - YAY).

I still have to try and see if I can get the fuel pressure.

Total outlay for the OBD adaptor and app was ~ $35.

There was a magazine article a few months ago charting computing power over time. I think the basis of the article was flops (megaflops, or terraflops - basically calculations per second (I'm not a computer person - so don't crucify me)). A smartphone has several times the computing capacity of the computers used in the Apollo program (if I remember right). I'll have to see if I can find the article when I get home at the end of the week.

Hey Azwhite. Do you know if that app does the 6.7L PIDs? Specifically the regen status and other stuff?

The 6.0 power stroke has no way to monitor fuel pressure. To monitor fuel pressure you have to buy after market products. They usually connect at the fuel pressure test port on the secondary fuel filter bowl. You may also buy a secondary fuel filter cap that has a port for a fuel pressure gauge.

I fell poor here. I am using Internet phone that plugs regular phone into special jack in computer. It is not fancy, but I have unlimited long distance + Canada + Mexico for $18 a year. How much you guys spend on your phones in a year?

OBD Scanner

I have nearly the same setup. I bought the scanner on Amazon Amazon.com: Soliport ELM 327 Bluetooth OBDII OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner: Office Products

and have tested a combination of devices with Torque.

Motorola Droid 2
Motorola Droid 2 Global
Motorola Xoom tablet
Asus Tranformer tablet

It works very well. I was plowing the storm yesterday here in Massachsetts and was able to see my instant stats while doing so. Not that I really needed to know that I was getting 1.2 mile per gallon while pushing 200' of heavy wet snow. But it was nice to know that things were operating properly, temperature was not fluctuating too much with the plow on driving at highway speeds. Checking for any faults in the system, etc.

Handy, cheap and useful. Not to mention entertaining.

I am also running the torque app with my phone/truck. It is very limited as of now with the 6.7L, but I keep hearing that they are working on updates. I have and HTC EVO 4G phone and use the PLX Devices Bluetooth adapter.

They wrote a free app that contains the Ford PIDs. I dl'ed that a few days ago and it works quite well also.

I think I am going to try it on some of my other cars and see if it works as well.

Running Torque as well. I have the PID's for the 6.7 and the 6.2 (heck, I have 'em for all the motors). What I don't have is the know how to setup the formula for Torque to use to display the correct measures. The extended Ford PID's in Torque were provided by a user here(which I've been in contact with to get some extra knowledge on how he did it) and are for the 6.0. Here's the thread on that: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nded-pids.html

The app works great for a code reader for other vehicles as well. My wife's Saturn Outlook threw some codes, I hooked up the BT adapter and fired up the app, did some searching online and found out a cheap plastic part in the transmission blew up. Luckily it was all covered under warranty...

The BT adapter I bought is in this thread. It's picky with my Xoom, but works flawlessly with my Galaxy Nexus:

Couple pics of my setup:

Here is the one that I just bought. It says it works with Android. It was just over 20 bucks in U.S dollars. Now I have to wait for it.

You say you have them for all the motors. Can you post up the 7.3 ones? I checked your link but it seems that was geared towards the 6.0
