Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

My 71 360 new fuel pump is making a knocking noise that I can hear from inside the cab. This is the third new fuel pump I have tried and they all make the knocking noise. First two were the loudest then the third one I tried a diffrent brand is a little quieter. The old original fuel pump did not make a knocking noise and the pump arm is a diffrent shape. All of the new pumps have an arm that extends and then bend up sharply near the end but the old pumps arm was straighter without the sharp bend up on the end. I think the old pump arm was like for a 302 or ? Do any of your fuel pumps knock? Would a 360 use a pump type for a 302?

Thanks!
Dale

The fuel pump exciter hanging off the end of the cam sproket may be worn. Most likely if you have tried three pumps this is the culprit.

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

I put the old fuel pump back in and no noise. It is only bad becuse of a slight check-valve leak. What about the diffrents in the arms? The old one has a more gental bend at the end that I think is the type for a 302 and all the new ones I tried have kind of a double bend at the end. Did 360's use two diffrent type of fuel pumps?

pump arm may be hitting timing cover.
check the pump arms of the new pumps for marks, shiny spots or anything that would indicate it hitting the cover.
check your old pump for a part number(should be on the side of the mounting flange), go to a quality auto parts store, have them cross the number to a quality brand and compare the pumps.

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

This link is to a picture of the two fuel pumps. The old one on the left does not make the knocking noise but the three new ones I tried do? Can anyone help identify the proper pump for a 71 360?

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

I've added another picture of the wear pattern on the two pumps. Original pump on the left and new on the right. Can pump designed for a small block be used on the 360? Could it have caused damage to the cam ring the arm rides on?

You seriously have the wrong pump. Profanity Removed Doesn't your parts guy have access to standard Fe pumps? There are millions of these old engines running around out there and they sure as heck aren't knocking. Find another parts Guy!

OK, so can anyone tell me which one of these pumps is for a 360? The old one on the left came out and does not knock. The new one on the right knocks like hell. Two diffrent parts houses tell me that the type on the right is for my 360... Why would the rone on the right knock and the old one on left not?

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

Here's a few ideas that may help:
Try to find the same brand and number as your old pump -just to compare if nothing else.
Call yet another parts store (an independent preferably), give them the number off your old pump and ask them to cross the number over using an actual paper catalog-not a computer.
Check several brands of pumps, I've noticed pump arm styles vary with each manufacturer.

I just took a walk around the machine shop and happened to find a 460 that was already apart and a fuel pump looking almost identical to your new pump was in the pile of parts. I'm assuming the pump belongs to that engine. I could barely make out the numbers but I believe they are #4897. Perhaps you've ended up with a 460 pump.

good luck

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

Howdy, I work for an independant CarQuest store. I carry Airtex fuel pumps and the part no. you need is 4008. It has a 3/8 hose nipple inlet and a 1/8 female pipe thread outlet. Or you could use a p/n 6676 which has 3/8 nipples in and out. You could also use a p/n 361 which does not have the filter canister, just make sure you ad an inline filter. For all of my FE's I use p/n 362, it is a replacement for early hi-po's and flows more gas, it is also clockable. Any parts store worth their salt should be able to cross these numbers, many of them carry Airtex like me. If you can't get any local help, I can ship you a pump. Just post your e-mail address and we'll work it out. Hope I helped, good luck

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

Chissler,
The new pump on the right is an Airtex 4008 and it knocks like hell. This is the second 4008 I've tried and they both make the knocking noise. The old one on the left does not make any noise that I can hear. I figured it has to be the different shape of the arm (lever). I would like to know what engine uses the arm type on the left and give it a try. Can you help me by trying to spec out a pump with the type of arm the old one has? Someone said it my br from a 302 but who knows for sure...
Thanks for your help!
Dale

Fuel pump knocking noise? Wrong type arm?

you know, it's obvious that the fuel pump you have is not an original equipment part for your motor. If all these parts stores keep coming up with the same basic configuration as the new pump you have and you still having these knockings going on, is it possible that just maybe the eccentric cam that drives that pump may not even be the correct one for your motor. This is assuming that your motor has been rebuilt at one time and maybe the guy who put it back together installed the wrong application to begin with? Just a thought, cuz it really sounds like that your problem is that the fuel pump and eccentric cam is not matched properly. If I were you I would check inside that camshaft cover and take a look at that eccentric cam just for your own peace of mind. Maybe even compare it with a new one?
