1960 F-100 Engine/trans upgrade to ???? Suggestions???

As instructed, the "NEWBIE" has posted a new thread..

Does anyone have suggestions (that are reasonable and attainable from a junkyard )for a viable engine/trans that can replace the 223 6 cylinder in my newly aquired 1960 F-100 utility (old ma-bell truck)

I am looking to get a good mix of economy and power for a work truck..

I am a long time ford owner 1979 the move away from other brands

1973 F-250 crew W/ 4.9 injected - good hauler, fair mileage for the size

1961 Falcon Ranchero W/ 200cid - Great runabout, excellent mileage, light dutie

I put the engines in both and I drive them daily

I also own a 1962 dodge lancer wagon that is my family car, I am second owner and it is clean and stock

Your experience and help will be great..

Thank You

Chuck

Welcome aboard! With a stable like that, and driving them to boot, I'd hardly call you a newbie. I vote, as usual for the 300 cu in six. I did put a 302 in a '40 1 1/2 ton about 6 years ago and that fits the bill too. A lot of folks seem to think they're too gutless, but it depends what you're moving up from. Both of these are a powerhouse in my book! GB

Thankx for the kudos, I was just in the process of fleshing out my garage with the other rides I have...

Regarding the truck, what trans would you put behind the 302. I would like to use a later injected model, what is the numbering of the 302 in liters ?? Would you change the rear end ??

I'm probably not the one to ask. I used a t-18 cuz I like to shift. I think the 302 is a 5.0, but someone can correct me here. I do however have all the specs on flathead v8s committed to memory. Not sure why, they just won't go away. Rear ends are all about how you want to drive it. Highest speed limit on Orcas Island is 40 mph, so stock gearing is great here.

I am running a 1990 Mustang 5.0 (302) with the stock fuel injection and the AOD trans and it's a good cruising combo for my '56. Trouble is, you don't see many low mileage versions in the yards anymore as they're getting kinda old.
What I'm planning for my '57 is a 4.6 or 5.4 Modular eng./trans out of a later Ford product. Many more to chose from nowadays.

Welcome! A lot depends on what you are planning on using the truck for. If you are going to use it to haul stuff and work it, I would suggest the 300 six for its low end torque with a 4 speed. If you are planning to drive it daily and want good highway speeds I would opt for the 302 and an AOD outo or T-5 manual transmission.

The C-6 behind a 302 is bullet proof!

C6's especially the sb variation are getting hard to find, look in econoline vans and larger 2wd pickups from the 80's. If your after economy more than towing and power handling an AOD will be fine for most applications

I would go with a 351(5.8l) over a 302(5.0L) any day, fuel mileage within a couple mpg and more power but it really depends on what you are going to be using it for and what speeds you need it to travel at. As for a donor 302 I would say a 1993+ mustang/explorer version would be your best starting point for performance especially is you intend to keep the EFI as the MAF system is much easier to work with than the SD.

Thank you for the info.

What kind of mpg do you get with your F250 light 300/ 6cyl ? ZF5

I have a 4.9/300 in my heavy F250 crew and I have great power with fair economy for the weight..

Around 17mpg, lots of highway driving and hills here so it is to the floor struggling to do highway speed all the time. 351 is going in as soon as my parts truck melts out. 300 is going to the scrap pile! Bought the truck for the rust free body. Had an bronco with the 300 and it sucked on the highway too, not a fan of the 300's at all.

Well, looks as if you never heard of making an I6 Breath Properly & that's why you can't get it to perform.
Of course you could be just another v-8 Zombie that believes that the only engine out there that can do what you wish it to, typical.
