Find the timing marks on the harmonic balancer at the front of the crankshaft. Make a white chalk mark at the 10 degrees BEFORE top dead center mark. Remove the spout connector, near the distributor on the 1990 I believe. Hook the timing light to the number one spark plug wire(front wire on the passenger side). Start the engine and maybe let it run until the fast idle slows down. Point the timing light at the chalk mark on the harmonic balancer and turn the distributor until the chalk mark lines up with the pointer. Tighten the distributor and reinstall the spout connector.

Will removing the spout connector have any effect on the way it idles ?

It probably will. Change the speed anyway I suppose. As long as it idles, you just need it unplugged to set the timing.
