1995 F150 300 i6 m5od 4x4 transmission woes

I was pulling some scrap out of the mud in 4x4 and when I grabbed 2nd gear and poped the clutch is didnt do anything. You can hear the clutch engaging the imput shaft, but the truck wont go! The transmission is stuck in 2nd gear and has gone past where 2nd usually is on the shifter. I cannot get the transmission into neutral. Do I need to replace my tranny or is it cheaper to repair my problems?

M5OD is a light duty transmission, they really aren't the transmission you want to pop a clutch on...I had an explorer 2wd that had one and it also blew out second gear, it was really difficult to get into gear and once it was in it stayed in. someone must have been towing something too heavy for the suv or had it in low gear for an extended period of time because when I cracked it open it was burnt up really bad and the bearing for second gear came out in pieces.

that being said it was about $750 for me to rebuild it myself.

This is potentially a shift fork issue, it's not hard to check. If you remove the shifter and floor covering (vinyl or carpet), you can remove a large plate in the floor of the truck. When this plate is out of the way, you can remove the top cover (which is the shift tower) of the M5R2 while it's still in the truck. I'm guessing you'll find the 1-2 shift fork worn away, not engaging the 1-2 shift hub. If this is the case, you can replace the shift fork yourself or buy a rebuilt shift tower.

Drain the old trans fluid and refill with Mercon to the bottom of the fill hole. Probably not a bad idea to fill it directly while the shift tower is off. Use some new fluid to flush metal shavings out of the case while you're there.
