starter issue

starter issue

hi guys i have a 1947 ford 1 ton flathead v8 and the motor turns over by hand but when battery is hooked up the starter motor just spins and doesnt turn the engine over would a starter from a 1951 ford truck work on a 1947

They are the same. Sounds like one of two things, either a bad Bendix drive that doesn't push out to engage the flywheel or missing teeth on the flywheel. When you remove starter check the teeth on the flywheel.
