Speedo not working....

My 85 F-250 6.9 IDI with Automatic and 4x4 speedo is not working. I have pulled the cable out of the transfer case and attached it to a drill, and it spins. I think it is missing a part like a gear in transfer case. what should this part look like and does anyone have first hand experience with find the replacement gears?

I am assuming you had someone looking at the speedo and it worked with the drill? If so, the next thing to do is leave the cable off the transfer case, and pull the retaining bolt out and pull the whole housing piece out that the cable threads to. You should have a plastic gear on the end of this.

If the plastic gear looks good, you then need to take the driveshaft off, and then take the snout off on the rear of the transfer case. You will then see a worm gear on the output shaft, if it's even there.

Alright,
I pulled the entire assembly out of the transfer case and no plastic gear at all. I felt around inside to see if it was right there and it as not. What size do I order as I understand there are several different sizes or splines. I do have the information off of the data tag from the back of the transfer case.

I am not sure on that. Do a search in this forum(or google works also) for "speedo gear" or something like that, and see if one of the old threads comes up. I remember a couple of guys asking about this, and some others had part numbers and gear colors.

What gear are you missing by the way? The one that hooks to the cable or the one that slips on the shaft, or both?

I am missing the one that goes on to the end of the speed ometer cable itself. I can feel inside the transfer case and feel teeth that a gear should mate to.

You can find these gears pretty much anywhere. There are even calculators that will tell you what size (number of teeth) you need. You will need the number of teeth on the drive gear, tire size and diff ratio. Then you'll have to be sure to get the one's for an automatic as they differ from a manual driven gear (left slant vs right slant).

Here is an example:

Here are some from Jegs:

And here is a calculator:

They have the gears for $6 each and the "C" clip for $1 at Jeff's Bronco Graveyard.

Just got some from them and shipping was pretty fast.

I think they're even still available from Ford.
