Oil pressure question

Ok, I have a question on oil pressure. It sits at about 60 cold at idle, once warmed up, drops to a little under 10. also, i have a lifter tick, and the oil pressure seems to fluctuate with the tick. Something to be concerned about? Just wondering.

Hard telling. The truck originally came with a 302. I'm guessing she's worn, but isn't knocking as of yet. Could a worn lifter be causing the fluctuation in oil pressure?

A lifter alone may not be your problem, very possibly a worn cam lobe allowing the lifter to drop away from the oil port in the lifter bore if you know what I mean.

Might be on to something there. I'll have to put a dial indicator on it and check the lift. If that's the case, that'll give me an excuse to put a performance cam in it.

Got a spare set of heads I plan on having milled down .025 and a fresh valve job. That, along with a cam, lifters, and straight up timing gears ought to breathe some life into her. In the meantime, I'm thinking about running 20w50 in her to quiet her down till i get the money up to do it up right.

Yeah, I love those old ford F100's and when i found out it had a 400, i had to have it. Poor old girl sat for 15 years, but she fired right up after a few minutes of tinkering. Just trying to sort it out, and having fun doing it.

I bet dollars to doughnuts that the rod and main bearings are badly worn, pull the pan and pull a main cap and rod cap and looky see. If crank is not scoured (and sounds like you may be OK) .... replace the shells one at a time putting caps back as you go.

I had same deal on my 351M at 75,000 miles in 1992. Did what I described and threw in a new oil pump, buttoned her up, and in 2012 she's still running. I just was hoping to get a few months out of it.

Tried the same thing on mine to no avail (at 75000m -ish), put rebuilt 302 heads and new cam and lifters in, but when finally got it all running the oil light would come on at round-abouts etc when in gear and foot on brake. threw in a new set of bearings and a new HV oil pump but it was worse than when I started. Even developed an intermittent knock. Had to eventually bite the bullet and rebuild from headgaskets down. BUMMER!!!
Goes good now but!

Sadly, i may have to pull the motor out if i want to change the bearings. I'm guessing the engine may have originally come out of an LTD. She's got a front sump oil pan, and what looks like a FMX, or cruise-o-matic bolted to it. Didn't the trucks come with a rear sump pan, or did some come with the front sump as well?

That's starting to become a big job mate. Very close to justifying a rebuild

I'm starting to think so myself. Can't be any harder than the rebuild i just finished on my Crown Vic. Those modulars are fun without the cam holders, lol.
