How to replace a gear shift lever

I just bought a f150 2001 5.4L crew cab. It has the O/D switch in the gear shift lever and the black plastic handle is broke. I found a complete replacement lever on ebay but cannot find any tutorials on how to replace this. Any leads on where I can find this info would be very appreciated....

Welcome to FTE by the way, My Name's John.

To answer your question, I'd check out alldatadiy.com it beats buying a repair book. I'll can send you the page on how to do that if you'd like?

Sorry bud,

I'm still looking but so far this has been the only thing I have been able to find:

Transmission Control Switch

Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) .
<TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=10 cellPadding=1><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>
  1. 1
</TD><TD vAlign=top>Remove the TCS cover. </TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top>2</TD><TD vAlign=top>Remove the TCS.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure
Transmission Mode Switch

PCM Inputs:

The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) signals the PCM with key power whenever the TCS is pressed. On vehicles with this feature, the Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL) lights when the TCS is cycled to disengage overdrive. The operator of the vehicle controls the position of the TCS.

PCM Output

Transmission Control Indicator Lamp
The Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL) is an output signal from the PCM that controls the lamp on/off function depending on the engagement or disengagement of overdrive. Refer to Transmission Control Switch in Hardware PCM Inputs.

I understand exactly. I was hoping that All-Data would tell me kow to do that but what I posted it all it shows. Is there by any chance a nut in the end of the handle behind the overdrive switch?

Replace lever...If you haven't yet.

Btw, nice link.
From memory. Tools- drift punch and hammer, philips screwdriver, small pin punch(about diameter of coat hanger), 13mm socket and ratchet, allen wrenches. Parts- you already have the shifter, get the pin that retains it in the column, there is also a rubber cushion at same point.
DISCONNECT BATTERY!1. Remove lower shroud around column-tilt column up, unscrew tilt handle, remove 3 philips screws. 2. Remove upper shroud- screw tilt handle in, tilt column down, put key in on position, press small button under key mount with small punch to remove key tumbler. 4. Remove shroud. 5. Use larger punch to drive out pin holding lever. 5. If you can't fish out the wire connector you may have to use 13mm socket to loosen column mount for access. Don't have a link, but we do the shifters a lot.

Thanks Newfordy

Your instructions saved me from heartburn, high blood pressure, acid reflux, aching joints, constipation and a foul mouth. Not to mention time and frustration. I just bought an 01 F250 SB Ext Cab Diesel and the overdrive button wasn't working. Got a new one for 80 bucks and replaced it in 45 minutes. And I am NOT the most mechanically inclined person you will ever meet.

I've learned more in the last two weeks lurking around here than I ever thought I could. Thanks again.

Randy
