shift linkage problems?

ok so it has happened a couple of time to me now and i haven't been able to figure out what it is...sometime when i shift to a different gear, it never happens at just one gear, my shifter feels like it gets out of the shift pattern and it feels like there is a ball or something circular in the way of me getting back in. when i play with the clutch it sometimes helps but not always. i havent had it happen a whole lot but i consulted my dad who is way more adept at fixing stuff than me and he told me this is probably my shift linkage. any ideas?

I "guess" we're talking about a 5 speed? Pull the shifter and check it. This transmission has no linkage like the "old school" transmissions.

yes it is a 5 speed and when i took it ou and examined it i found that the receiver for the shifter has a part of it, roughly a quarter of it, that has been broken and is now missing im guessing that is my problem. how hard is it to fix that is it a total rebuild or can i remove and replace the part?
