Post Sylmar Museum G2G March 10th 10AM

A fine idea for an outing by ND; March 10th meet at Nethercutt by 10AM. Might find a Ford or 2 there... It's FREE admission .

MapQuest Maps - Driving Directions - Map

The Nethercutt Collection features rare collectibles ranging from mechanical musical instruments and antique furnitureto the true heart of the collection: over 250 American and European automobiles dating from 1898 to 1997. Founder J.B. Nethercutt spent a lifetime establishing this collection of historic importance. Unique to automobile museums, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars, royalty and other notable personalities.
The entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar.
Opened in 1971, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts, historians, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge.

I had no idea such a place existed, and free admission is definitely the right price! Would love to make it but I'll be in Phoenix that weekend for the NHRDA opener.

I had not heard of the place either, but Huell Howser was there on an episode a few weeks ago. They took him for a spin in some of the old alternative fueled cars. Electric, steam.

I've wanted to go the Nethercutt Museum for many years. I basically drive by it every weekday. Unfortunately March 10th is already booked up with lots of family coming in from out of town. Now if I can just convince everyone to make this part of the schedule...

I just realized that you're talking about Huell Howser of California's Gold. Who doesn't love that show!? A segment on the Nethercutt Museum is absolutely something I'd expect to see on California's Gold..

That's a place I've always wanted to go and never made it.
And it still is. I'll be working in Vegas.

J. B. Nethercutt is the guy who started Merle Norman Cosmetics, and it was a VERY-rewarding enterprise for him. He kept his Gulfstream at the same facility that I kept my main office, so I got to know some of his flight operations staff. A few years later, my step-son dated the daughter of the company's seamstress. Yes, he had STAFF! All kinds of staff, but his auto restorers were among the best in the entire world, which is why he ended up with such a world-class collection.

Been to "San Sylmar" two or three times over the years, and it's ALWAYS been great! Would LOVE to see the rest of it all!

Count me in, and maybe Marge, too. It's on my calendar to be there.

Would have helped if I had spelled his name correctly, eh? And I still didn't get my mistake until just now. But it is now fixed.

I think the episode might have been his California Green show, since alternative fuels was the theme, and how nothing is really new.

I'm tentative on this G2G as of now.

1930 Packard 734 Speedster with "Daphne at the Well" radiator cap. 734: 7th series on the 134" wheelbase.

The other cars with orange spokes appears to be 1930 or 1931 Cadillacs. Since I'm a Packard 'nut' I don't know that much about "Cattle-Hacks."

JB collected classic cars as defined by the Classic Car Club of America. The term 'classic' has been taken so far out of context today, it's ridiculous.

The only Fords considered classics would be Brewsters aka "heart front Fords." 1933/34 Ford sedans with Brewster custom bodies.

One of the cars Huell drove was a 1924 Doble steamer w/a qwik-fire boiler. Howard Hughes was a major investor in the company. The company founder went to jail, convicted of stock fraud.

30 some years ago, JB said: "Step on it Dorothy" and she did, the Lincoln's engine blew up, JB and the missus were stranded in the wilds of KS. They were on their way to the Bucks County PA car show.

Roger Abbott (long time pal a mine) was dispatched from Sylmar with a truck containing another classic. JB & Dorothy soon continued on their way.

I'll be attending, but "She who must be obeyed" will not. "She" will be in SLC for the NACE confab.

Just one week away, and don't forget that inexpensive entry fee.

Thx for the bump ND.
