Does this 1977 F150 4x4 look like a "good" truck to you guys?

Hi all,

I could buy this 1977 F150 4x4 for pretty cheap money. I went and looked at it today and found myself getting "the fever" that comes over us all from time to time. But I resisted and took a few pics to ask you guys about it.

I think it is the original engine and the clock say 146,000. It runs, and idles smoothly once warmed up. It has I *think* a 351M engine, I saw an "M" stamped on it. It has a C6 transmission. The engine is dirty. It looked like a factory original autolite carb.

The body has no rust holes or dents, but it has a hideous flat black primer paint job with some gold flames on the rear wheel wells and the hood does not look original (from a 1979 perhaps). The frame and suspension springs are not very rusty at all! The interior is decent, and the 4 wheel drive works.

Overall my impression was that is seems like a very tough truck, solid and with a strong suspension. Does anyone see anything horribly wrong with it, based on these few and not very good pictures?

I guess I could post this over in the dentside forum but I don't know those guys like I know you.

Two bad things I saw: there was no "emmissions decal" under the hood that I could find, and also the doorjam identification label had been painted over. Could that cause legal problems?

The 351M is that truck with a C6, tires, gears, and lift like that will be a gas pig.

She'll eat like a pig at the trough.

Yeah, that's true although I don't think the truck has been lifted. I could be wrong though. I would expect the 351M plus C6 plus 31" tire combo to give maybe 10 mpg. I have wondered if high gas prices might sound the death nell for these old dinosaur trucks.

That exact thing (well, similar thing - new trucks, not dinosaurs) happened the first time gasoline hit $4/gallon, and the F150 lost its best-selling-vehicle title to a Toyota model.

Looks to be a 351M/400, but with those being identical on the outside, no way to know 100% which one it is.
If the price is right, and it runs/drives well, it'd be worth the trouble.
As pointed out, don't expect to exceed 10 MPG. If it does, be happy.
Front bumper appears to be from a 78/79.

Don't see pics either. Thought it was a SRWare Iron (Chrome) issue but I switched to IE and had the same issue. Also don't see pics in his album.

Let me ask the IB guys if they have anything to offer; they just installed a plugin here the other day that resizes (some) images, I wonder if that's causing a problem.

What browsers are you guys (beater & brad) using? beater is apparently using Chrome & IE I'm using Firefox on Linux and everything seems OK to me.

Galendor, that's a nice looking truck. I say go for it, if you can afford to have a second truck.

The thing I like about it is that it is largely unmolested. The smog pump etc. are still there, and the truck hasn't been "lifted" or "lowered" or any other such nonsense common to these old trucks.

But I understand the 351M engine is not desireable, so that is a negative point. It would be a gas hog.

There is no emmission sticker I could find, and the exhaust has no catalytics in it. Also the informational sticker on the door jam has been painted over. Doesn't that make the truck sort of "illegal"?

For you guys who can't see the pictures, what happens when you copy-n-paste this URL into your browser:

Code:

Hmm, I get a blank screen when I do that.

The emissions tags on those were on the valve cover, no tags elsewhere in those days. The tag on the door jamb only gave option codes and gvw specs. Don't remember which year they started mandating cats on 150's, might have been 78.

Converts to https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/m...6-imag0429.jpg and I get a blank screen.

Windows 7 with Iron, IE9 and firefox 9.0.1

All three just show a blank page.
