So to make a long story short, the big red 60 has become my daily driver. sounds cool till you figure the gas mileage and bogger tires, no radio, etc. and by the way, it still has a wicked fourth gear whine on the interstate. did i mention no radio to cover up the whine. it got me thinking about a quick fix with some lucas oil or something similar. i got out the book and it says the tranny calls for 50w motor oil. if im gonna use 50w and some lucas, why not just use 80-90 gear lube? any thoughts?

 

The heavier gear oil will work. But, your fourth gear whine is a bearing. A whine in the lower gears, especially first, is normal gear whine. In fourth, you should get a hum, not a whine.

 

o yea, i know its a bearing. im just looking for a small band-aid for the time being. havent decided on a trans swap or rebuild of the stocker. figured i would just wait till it blows a big chunk out of the side, then figure it out later. i know that sounds bad but its my reality. come to think of it, my 63 probably has the t98 so i wont have to look far when it comes flying apart. the 63 will get a engine swap with a auto trans in the future for my son's first truck. spoiled rotten kid!

 

I dont know if this is urban myth or not but back in the day growing up with a dad who was a mechanic and worked the auto machine shops. I used to hear that they would put sawdust inside of rearends and gearboxes to quite things down.This was supposed to be a used car dealer trick. On another note I plan on bringing my 63 4wd up to FE power so I would be very interested in what you are going to do to yours so I hope you post up what you do. At least I for one have an interest. Ive got most if not all of the parts to make it look just like factory and I plan to stay with the 4speed. Good luck on yours.

 

thats no myth buzz44. i had a buddy back in high school that bought a fj40 landcruiser from a fly by night dealer. one day the t-case kept popping out of 4wd. when it was taken apart the front axle and t-case were full of gear lube and saw dust. i think its used more for making gears grab then for making them quiet. im sure it would make them quiet to, but im not gonna put sawdust in it at this point. i think im gonna try the gear lube. and i will be looking for a 66 ford galaxie for the engine and trans donor for the 63. that way i can get parts for my car and a engine for the truck. i will keep everyone posted when we get that far.

thats funny! i remember the look on my buddies face when they told him his front diff was full of sawdust. there was no sheriff around to help him out. they put the diff cover back on and we wheeled the weee out of it that way. it was a hand full, three on the tree and it had the t-case lever under the dash. had to hold the t case lever while you wheeled and shifted and steered and tried not to fall out. (no top, no doors, no brains, etc.) had a homemade spring over lift kit. God i miss those days, and him. RIP Todd

 

SAE 90 gear lube is the same viscosity as SAE 50 motor oil. The difference is that the gear lube has a different additive package. The T98A can use the gear lube, but I do not think it will quiet your bearing or make it live longer.

 

Hey, you could really go back in time and try some 600W gear oil. According to my dad, that stuff would quiet down the noisiest transmission or axle. For a few days.

 

I had an old mechanic friend when I was a kid that saved all the used cork valve cover gaskets and stuffed a couple of handfuls of them in a diff that needed quieting, and bolted the cover back on. I like the 600 wt. idea. Model A style.......but keep the can inside, next to the woodstove or it won't pour this time of year.
