Any 6.2 common problems? - Ford Powerstroke Diesel Forum

 

I took the camper off this week for the first time since 500 miles, truck has 8,500 on it now. Had to run from northern ca to San Diego last night, truck was empty, 14.2 MPG according to the lie-o-meter. Best number I've ever seen. Truck has 4.30 gears and very little of that was at the speed limit.

So how fast...really I'm curious. When I replace my truck I will not buy another diesel. I might miss the power but they are just way too complicated...plus the extra cost of expensive diesel fuel and the maintenance requirements...so it will most likely be a 6.2!

 

Last weekend driving from Northern NH to Boston, cruise set at 72 most of the time except for when the speed limit drops to 55 in a few spots. The Lie-o-meter said 18.1, I was shocked. Yes, that could be off a bit but it's still close.

 

A good tail wind can make that happen

 

I have a 2011 F-350 single wheel four door short box with 3:73 have 10,000 miles on it. Some times with a heavy load sometimes not sometimes no load ,sometimes no trailer. I run hills, flat mostly 65 to 85 mph not a lot of in town. The truck over all the conditions has averaged 12.4 miles to the gallon and I am very pleased with that I had a 2005 6.0 diesel that was set up the same way as this truck and drove it the same way and in the 18,000 miles I drove it is averaged 9.7 miles to the gallon that is why I sold it. I will never own another diesel pickup. If I need a diesel to pull a big load I will get the semi out.

 

This thread always has a way of reconfirming what I already know. I will own a 6.2

 

We just wrapped up an 11 day Mid-West and Great Plains trip from GA through TN, KY, IL, WI, MN, ND, SD, IA, NE, MO, KY, TN and then back to GA. 4157 total miles driven. That left me with just under 14,000 total miles on the odometer.

Average mpg was 13.68 computer and 13.44 hand calculated. For the trip I had added a Softopper bed cover which I believe hurt fuel economy by 1-1.5 mpg. Without it I usually get 14.7-15.3 at Interstate speeds. Speeds averaged 70-80 mph. With myself, family, and gear we had about 1000lbs in total payload.

I did try E85 for one tank and that was enough for me as we only got 9.84 mpg for that tank.

 

I haven't emptied out the E85, but mileage took a dip in my F250 6.2 with a 3.73 axle
4x4. Regular no ethanol gets about 16 on the highway and 12-13 in town for me.

 

Picked up my newly purchased 2011 F-350 RC/LB with 8' Lance 815 camper on board. drove 50+ miles northbound from Ashland , MA to Pepperell, MA on Interstate 495. (lotsa hills) 10.6 MPG. I'm happy so far. 87 Octane and I have the 3.73 E-axle.

 

After a couple years with my 6.2 I've noticed that 70 mph is about the tipping point. I can drive on a 65mph highway and get almost 18 if the wind/terrain isn't hurting it, but you get up over 70 mph and it starts to drop off in a hurry. Real tough to get more than about 14.5 at 77 mph cruising on the interstate. After two years of mixed driving (highway, a lot around town, I pull loaded trailers a few times a week for business, couple LONG unloaded interstate trips, etc) I'm getting just over 13 mpg overall. I'll take that all day long. Big improvement over my old 460 or V10.

 

I have 4.30 gears and it starts to drop hard at 65 with the best being 55 to 60, but we bought the truck to pull our trailer not run down the highways empty so we are fine with the empty mileage.

2 week trip Az, NM, and Texas


2 lanes at 65, Interstate at 70 to 80. no towing. I did do 30 miles of off road up to 10,000 altitude in New Mexico. My scanguage showed a high of 16 during some segments and a low of 13 climbing up to altitude.

 

Just got back from my Krown treatment.
350miles round trip. Empty, drove 65 mph on the pike.
A little, maybe 40 miles on back roads and I got 16.9 mpg!

 

I enjoy reading the 6.2L forum and seeing how happy most folks are with their choice of engines.

Regarding mileage, remember that air resistance increases as a square of vehicle speed. So at some point, mileage will start to drop off quickly. Sounds like 70 is your "magic" number.
