1996 5.8l exhaust configuration

Hi everyone! Newbie here. I have a 1996 f150 with the 5.8l engine. I am presently doing research on installing catback dual exhaust. I have two questions. First, has ANYONE here had ANY experience with super 10 series or the hushpower 2 series mufflers from flowmaster? I have searched youtube and can't find any video"s with the same exhaust configuration that my truck has... Second...My truck seems to have two(2) catalytic converters. There is a "Y" pipe coming from the engine with the first of two attached to it and then about a two foot section of pipe coming out of the first catalytic converter going to what appears to be a second cat. I called the Ford dealership and asked if the second was removed would that effect the inspection of the truck and they told me it would. If the first is being fed by both sides of the engine why would it matter? Also, has anyone done this with success?

The super 10 series is a pretty loud muffler if that's all that you use for an exhaust, but the factory cats actually quiet the exhaust down quite a bit. The 2nd cat is used to "further filter the exhaust gasses". If you have to get inspections, they will most likely throw a fit about taking a cat out. but you might be able to get away with it. I don't think it'll effect the way your motor runs if you took one out though. I'm not sure however, my truck (also a 351w) doesn't have any cats and just runs into a flowmaster big block 50's series. It's pretty loud when you get on it.

Yes you have two converters like most trucks of this era. Your 1996 truck uses an OBD-II style powertrain control module (PCM). It is more advanced than the earlier EEC-IV based PCMs. You truck uses 3 O2 sensors to monitor the engine and converter efficiency. It is not that easy or advisable to remove one or both of them unless you are planning to replace the 2-converter set with a modern single 3-way converter.

There are ways of tricking the third O2 sensor, but in the long run you are probably better withe two discrete converters or swapping to the single 3-way converter if you are looking for a better sound or performance.

If your keeping the stock convertors, just straight pipe it and put a Y pipe behind the cat. This sounds great, and isn't all that loud. Those cats muffler it pretty well.

If do that and feel its too loud, then look at getting a glasspack with a Y on it commonly called a torpedo pack. This sounds really good on 5.0 or 5.8 trucks.

I would stay away from anything made by Flowmaster and its hollow tin can sound and droning.

Either of these works great if you just going for a good sound. If you want better performance, get a single high flow cat and run 3 inch single pipe back to a single in dual out muffler. In that case look at Dynomax or Magnaflow.
