Good job Mike! You need a lot of patience in this old truck game.
You kept after it & got it done!

Thanks guys. This proves how valuable this forum is. I'll be starting the 12 volt conversion this weekend.

But not before you pull that thing out of the garage and get us some pictures. If I had the choice of driving my new truck around this weekend and getting to know it vs. doing a 12 volt conversion, I'd at least take my woman down to the local drive in and get a milkshake. Who knows, she may think that slow crank of that big powerful 6 volt battery is the sexiest thing she's ever heard. I'm just having fun with you man. I am glad those thicker cables fixed it.

Hot Wires !

That's one of the reasons why they changed from 6 to 12 volts. Doubbling the voltage required only half the amps, so wire half the size could be used. Good to remember when working on a 6 volt systems (Larger guage wire)

Yep. Good old Ohm's law and all of its concepts. These same principles are why houses burn to the ground every day when an inappropriately small wire can't handle the amperage. Imagine if that cable was buried inside a wall or attic......... When a breaker (or fuse) kicks in a house, there is a reason. That reason needs to be found. Same principles apply for an automobile.

You are right Doc. If a mechanic tells you that he replaced a fuse to fix a problem don't believe him.

Oh..we do have drive-in's and milkshakes here in California....I'm thinking that if you ever found a girl who loved your truck (and you) because of the 6v groan....she'd probably be a keeper!!!

Doc, your comment on the 6V starter and using 12V to start reminds me of an old WD Allis tractor we had years ago with a loader on it. It would sit outside for weeks at a time without starting and then we would need to use it. The battery was generally weak because of no use. We jump started it for years with jumper cables hooked to 12V from the pickup and never had a problem with the starter.

Pulled the girl out and took some pics. Here is the thread with the pics. Took a nice drive and went through all of the gears. The drivetrain is fine but I will need to get a rebuilt steering gearbox. Anyone know where I can get one online? Here is the link to pics. Enjoy! https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...y-1951-f1.html
