I was thinking about running 49 merc car tail lights mounted on fender. Any other good ones. I like stock but always looking for cool options

Options are limitless...a web search will turn up many designs. The Merc lights work so well because they were designed for the Merc trucks.

I'm using the 38-39 Ford car teardrop tail lights. I have a French kit for them too just need to decide whether to put than on the roll pan or fenders.

The tear drop tail lights are cool i have them on my 51 chevy truck. I mounted them on the sq tubing that is the stake pockets that run down the side of bed look good there. The show american restoration his 51 f1 has them mounted on fender looks good also.

The PO had installed 56 ford f100 tail lights on my truck. I think I will reuse them until I can get the proper ones for a 49.

mustang taillights

I am going to use 65 mustang taillights and a little massaging and they will mount on the fenders. I have a 65 mustang convertible with extra lights so going to use them. You can also get real bright led for these lites for about $120.00

I've seen quite a few: 40s era Chrysler, 60's Corvette, 79 El Camino rear bumper and lights (really liked this one), 58 Chev, 51 Ford, 48 Ford, LED strip lights across under the tailgate, 50 Buick.

To break the mold, try: PT cruiser, Chevy HHR.

Here's mine;
late 40's Town and Country tailights with blue dots added to where the reflectors once were;

While not period correct, here's another way to solve the tail light problem

I liked the look of the stock tail lights and brackets but I wasn't willing to pay $30 a piece for repops. Round trailer lights were close to the same size, same look and less than $15 for the pair. The housings can be painted if properly prepped.

Bobby good eye, did you ever see that before you did it, uf not kudos for thinking outside the box. You prob had to trim them to make the curve fit right?

Thanks

I found the tailight housings on the hull of a car slowly being swallowed by the desert in SE New Mexico. They were the only shiny parts left on the thing.

I had them laying around and the curve was close, but yea, I did have to "massage" them a bit to match the fender. I also had to fabricat bulb holders for them. I was able to by the lenses (which are real glass) from this site:
Taillightking Web Site

As far as I know, I've never seen another set like them mounted to one of our trucks

Not my intention to be a darksider - just do what looks right for the truck.
I also wanted more visible taillights for braking. Mine wasn't original when I got it - sort of 1970's with some trailer lights mounted on the back. Modern corvette lights....

I really like these too, I was thinking into the fender myself. Thanks for this thread, I've been searching myself. L8R ZFLASH
