Slip Yoke part #

Same here. I'm going to replace the front slip yoke with a brand new. Re-greased it several times over the years and the clunk just comes back in a week or two. A Ford A-tech told me the trannys output shaft is hardened and the front drive shaft yoke isn't, so the output shaft wears out the front yoke splines. Installing a new one should get rid of the noise for a few years till it wears out again or at least greatly minimize the clunk. I can't imagine they clunked after they were sold new or people would have bitched. Replacing mine and installing 2 new "Spicer" u-joints, the double lip kind. The best they make. The drive shaft itself is separate. All that's needed is to remove the front u-joint from it and replace the part that slides into the tranny finishing with a newly installed u-joint.

I would stick with the OE design. Balance at that point of the driveline is critical. I will look for one from a Ford wholesaler on-line for savings "Silver State Ford".

I just got my new one delivered from Buy Ford Parts Online - Ford Parts Discount Outlet . for $87.50 plus shipping. #9L3Z4841B for my particular truck and VIN, with the OE dampener ring. Much cheaper that the local Ford dealer. Can't wait to install it and 2 new triple lip NEAPCO U-joints with greasable zerks. I'll bet my OE's are dry or darn near. I'll install a new rear transfer case seal to to ride on that new surface. I may have the whole shaft rebalanced/checked while it's at Driveline Specialists in town. I'll stop by the Ford dealer for the latest version of the special grease used on the splines. Maybe I'll pick up 1 mpg. That would be nice since gas just jumped nearly $0.50 a gal.in the last week or so.
