towing a fifth wheel

My brother-in-law has a 2009 6.4L 4x4 crewcab and is thinking of buying an Keystone Alpine fifth wheel weight is 12,380. Will he have a problem? Pulling this thing around?

You didn't specify if its a f-250 or 350 but 12+ lbs really isn't a whole lot for both of them, He will be able to pull the weight with no problem. He needs to know the hitch pin weight on the 5er though. ( Thats where the 250 and 350 differ )

dry weight at 12380 is just a start. it might weigh as much as 16 or 17K loaded. A 350 or larger will handle it, but a dually would be the best. My 5'er and truck loaded for travel and full of fuel wieghs in just shy of 24K. That's just 2K less than rated for my '08 350 dually diesel super cab with Tow Boss.

A 5er that has a weight of 12,380lbs dry weight, will have a king pin weight of around 2,476lbs but he has to add extra weight ( due too fluids, camping gear, and just random stuff he adds to the camper) I need to know the truck type to figure the rest (250 or 350) to find the king pin weight the general rule of thumb is to take the total weight of the camper loaded x 20% (exp. 16,000lbs x20%= 3,200lbs KPW)

Is it a dually? Does it have Tow Boss or just Tow Command? Sans both these options he may be a little light.

He can pull it. My SRW F250 pulls just fine.

We have some pretty good "tow police on here"! I know you can pull it, look at the pin weight pretty close. I would do it and not look back especially with the 350. Power, is not even and issue.

As I read that chart, max 5th wheel weight for an SRW Crew Cab 4x4 is 15,200. I'd say that by the time he gets road ready and in the TV, he'd be pushing that limit pretty hard. Now . . . if it's a DRW . . .

Yes it is a 6ft bed.

The Truck:
Tow package (with brake control)
4X4
6.4 L
Automatic
SRW
6ft bed (or is it a 6 1/2 ft bed?)
The 5th wheel hookup that came with the truck has a rating of 24,000 lbs. (last owner pulled a 20,000 lbs trailer).

This is his first diesel and first fifth wheel camper. Just making sure.

We often make this towing stuff way more complicated than it is. Truth is almost all late model 5th wheels are designed to be towed by a 3/4 ton truck. Excluded from that are the very high end 5ers like Mobile suites and the big toy haulers when loaded with toys. And you can tow those with a SRW truck, it just doesn't handle as well as a DRW. Tell your BIL to back up to the fiver and hook up and go. Happy RVing.
