The U haul trucks usually had the FT 330 MD engine. This is really an FE motor with FT heads IIRC, as well as the governor set up. 3.875 bore, 3.5 stroke iirc, so if someone claims it's bigger than a 330, ask them to pull a head and prove it.

That looks ok in the pics, but you'd have to drive it and see it up close to really know what the full story is. Since it's an F600 it may have a larger engine, but U haul doesn't make money optioning up their stuff.....

Looks like tubeless tires--excellent on that if they are.

I have a "74 Uhaul F600 and it has a 359 (stickers on the valve covers) in it. According to the internet that is a 361 with a cast iron crankshaft that Ford built specifically for Uhaul. Uhaul not only didn't "option up" their trucks they optioned them down. How much did Ford knock off of the selling price for the cast iron instead of forged steel crankshaft- $10?

So is that a small diameter (FE size) crank snout too?

I don't think till ford did it in 79 at least.

I do know u-haul would always specify the lowest gears they could get to make life easy on a clutch.
THat and they aren't the ones paying the fuel bill.

Correction- it's a 78 model. I don't know if it's the large or small snout crankshaft. Can you tell by the size of the bolt in the center of the snout? The engine has other features of the HD engines such as the thermostat housing and the exhaust manifolds with the two extra bolts near the center.

See if the front cover is iron and has engine mounts on each side. IIRC, that is the way FT covers are made.

FT steel crank snout is 1.75", FE cranks are 1.375".

My truck is a 1978 F-700 and it has 392 on the air filter. Is this the same as the 390 I had in my 72 F-250?

No. The FT motor is a 391 or 389, not 392. The FT motors differ from the FE's in a number of ways, so they are not easily interchangeable.

Wow, I guess I'd better check my glasses. I could have sworn it said 392? Anyway i took off the carburetor since it had been sitting for a while and cleaned it out good and it has this governor on it and I was wondering if I need this or what it's function is and the benefit I will have from this device? What say you?

The governor is in place to limit engine speed. Some are tied into the speedo to limit vehicle speed as well.

The benefit is in keeping the engine below the speed at which the rods like to fly out the side of the block. These engines are not made for much over 3500 rpm, and if you over rev them they do not last long at all. I would suspect a valve would hit a piston first, but running one without a governor would allow you to find out what flys apart first and report back....
