I've got a leak?

hey all, my '93 van has sprung an oil leak. I feel dumb for asking, but in this picture does it look like the oil is coming from the silver cover? If so, what is this called so I can find a gasket? Thanks,

thats the pushrod/lifter cover. its fairly common to have them leak, and sometimes difficult to make them seal properly. make sure you get a cork gasket (not rubber), and silicone it. also, check that the cover is straight, as they can easily warp.

Probably another dumb question, but would you silicone both sides of the gasket? Thanks,

If you never want it to leak again , I would use the WACKER RTV for Powerstrokes it is like the PL Premium of RTV sealants. No gasket just put it on as specified and thats it...Trust me I had to re-seal my intakes on my truck and this stuff is unbelievable.....puts other sealants to shame.
Buy it at Ford or International F5TZ-19G204-AB or Wacker (pron. vahker) T-442

yes, RTV would be on both sides of the gasket. because most 4.9s had a rough casting on the block (not machined), i would still want the gasket plus the RTV, whether you use cheap black stuff or the stuff blageurt mentioned, which i have no experience with

Well, PL is something I do know well, which leads me to ask, would I ever be able to get it apart if I use this WACKER RTV stuff?

Had same issue on an older Chevy (sorry) straight six, and fixed it with cork gasket backed up with gasket goo!

Be sure the gasket surfaces are super clean and ALL old material removed or you will be doing it again very soon.

Thanks. I checked with 6 different parts stores today and none had a cork gasket, they all were rubber. Most were normal, but the first place I went their gasket is solid rubber and a good 3/16" thick.

So what's everyone's opinion? Use the thick rubber one and goop it up? keep looking for a cork one? Just use goop? thanks,

Brew

Cork may have gone way of the Dodo Bird. You should be cool with the rubber.

Let me add something, hopefully useful: make sure the rubber gasket's RTV or other sealant is somewhat "set up" or skinned over on the block before applying sealant and the cover. I've had many a rubber gasket slip around under a valve cover---it was too slippery. A mechanic friend suggested this, having found it worked slightly better.

This is a good idea only if the gasket doesn't fit into a recess or otherwise held from slipping around by some means.

Ok, followup question. I have removed the cover and it is soaking in hot soapy water to clean it up. It would be much easier to put it back if the distributor was gone (I have the cap and wires off) but I am not sure if I can just pull it out? and if so, how do I make sure it is installed in the correct location when I put it back?

Firing orders and all that is confusing me, I am not sure if I can just mark something, then hopefully slide it back when i am done? Thanks,

Brew

You can do that but be sure that piston #1 is at tdc ( Top Dead Centre) .
Since the 4.9 is a gear driven cam there is less of a margin for error for correct Ignition timing. An as far as understanding firing order you need to know Distribiutor direction and realize all frame of reference is from standing in front of the engine , in the Plan View ( looking down from above )

I think it got it in there without pulling the distributor. I haven't ran it yet, but I *think* I got it without the gasket moving on me. We will have to see. Thanks,

Brew
