Well i broke down and bought the Coleman 242B Ive been seeing listed on Craigslist for a few weeks. got the guy talked down to 20 dollars from his 35 dollar asking price. so i made the trek out to Hawthorne which was not bad going but coming back was a drag.
Got it home took some pictures then cleaned the globe and took a wet paper towel to the rest of the lantern and wiped some dirt off. rinsed the fount out with some fuel and re filled, burned on a Coleman #21 mantel, pumped it up, tightened the fuel valve packing nut down just enough to stop the leak and the little guy lit right up!
after it was lit it was pulseing a little to i shut it down pulled the generator out to clean and seems that the one it has is crimped togeather and the pricker rod cannot come out. little research and it seemes a 200A generator is used or i should say listed for a 242B so i grabbed a 200A generator i had gotten with a parts safe for a 200A and put it in the 242B, re lit and it purred along!
while it was running grabbed a small dab of mothers metal polish and rubbed the Coleman logo on the fount and it got better with out too much effort, so i have faith that it will polish up nicely when i tear into it.
oh by the way its stamped 1 3 and from what Ive read its a march of 1941 lantern
sorry for all the babbling! now for what everyone really came to see... PICTURES!

well i wanted to light it last night in the dark but i some how fell asleep at 6pm and slept till 2:30am (stupid graveyard shift) just got in from lighting it in the dark before sunrise, holy smokes its bright for a single mantle!
one thing i noticed, the Coleman #21 seems to burn whiter on the 242B than my 220/228's. none the less i am very happy with my purchase, granted a little more then id like to spend, but it works with out much of any issue so i am ok with the little higher cost.

Didja get her running again? Is any fuel coming out the generator? That's the brass tube in my hand (Coleman's are thinner).
My latest project is an Ash Flash - hong kong version of Coleman.

here is what i have been tinkering with on and off for the last month. just need a fuel valve packing to finish the 220F.
the 220F was almost as dirty and grungy form the leaking valves as the 228F is. as soon as i finish this 220F ill start on the 228F.
Sean, have been enjoying the 200A and 228B, but sadly i thing the 228B is sick again. a lot of pulsing of light, not a solid hiss every now and then it seems to get a bit of raw fuel through or try to die. tried cleaning the generator no luck, tried another used cleaned up generator no luck... then tried a brand new old stock generator and it was a little better but not ideal. think i might need to clean the fuel tubes and air tubes, or at the very least make sure im not chasing my tail over something simple.
side note: holy hockey sticks is the 200A bright! i am almost afraid to light the 242B with it, bad enough i see spots with one let alone with 2!

I do believe you've got the 0000 steel wool trick down Justin.
Worth a try checking the F/A tube (that's the one going down into the font; short for fuel/air tube). Sometimes that rod spring gets sprung and wont allow the rod to rise and let the CF in. Agree, normally a new Genny does the trick... lemme see if I have a pic of the f/a tube... ah, see below, lower middle of the pic - little spring.
Justin, you can also try running the 228B, without the air tube, mantle, frame, etc. Just use the font, valve and genny (kinda like the 2nd pic but with genny, fuel cap and pressure system in place. Pressure up, then open the valve. Should be a nice steady stream of fuel flying up 2-3 feet in the air. If she runs constant for a couple minutes, fixed; if not, you've got blockage downstream.
Yeah, I've come to appreciate those single mantle lanterns, they kick butt.
Nice El Camino...
