Checking for ECM codes
2000 Excursion v10 - 160k with very low oils comsumption: This hesitation problem started few years ago and only lasted a short time then it ran fine for months. The problem was always around 2000 rpm when running on normal road. It's been slowly getting worse so I checked with Auto Zone and said there will be no codes if cel is not on. I this true? I am suspecting the coil boots and thought a diagnostic would show something. There hasn't been any backfiring so would like to know if this could be the boots or a coil. Many thanks for any help.

Yes it could be the boots or a coil going bad...could be a number of other things. Do you know the history of the spark plugs? A fairly ease first step is to replace the boots and get one or two new coils, swap out one coil on each cylinder until the problem goes away. You may need two coils if more than one is bad.
Does it do it more when there is high humidity or rain? If so boots or coils are more likely.
There can be pending codes that do not turn on the CEL but in our Ex's the bad coils do not seem to set any codes, pending or other.
