radiator question..

i was working with my dads 350 yesterday an i look under to see some rusty colored water coming from one of the fittings on the water pump an i looked in the rad it was bone dry! nevermind that but there was about 2 an a half inches of this brown clay mud looking stuff once i took the cap off.. blocking up any antifreeze from getting in. i clean all of it out pour anti freeze in an it just steady drips out of the water pump. im thinking maybe it was run dry for to long so the pump for hot an maybe warped? anybody have this happen to them? thanks for any feedback i just dont wanna have the motor sieze up .
feel free to ask any other questions i kind of typed that up quick...

What motor is in the truck?

It sounds like it needs a cooling system flush. Buy a prestone flush kit for it. Hook the hose up to the heater hose and run it until the water is clear. Pull the radiator completely out and stick the hose in it until it runs clear again. Then fill it back up with 50/50 antifreeze/water. Use the additive if it's a diesel.

Sounds like the water pump might be bad too. If its leaking from the pump itself, and not a hose.

When a water pump starts leaking, it's going bad.

The one in my '89 F150 straight 6 went bad at 68k miles.

And had been dripping at the vent hole since I own the truck, 2 years ago.
