Considering a 2006 - 6.0L F350 dually 4x4

Morning,

I'm considering purchasing a 2006 - 6.0L F350 dually 4x4 with 64,500 miles. This is my first diesel and I want to get off on the right foot. Are there any big headaches waiting for me, or could this be a diamond in the rough, at the right price?

Thanks for the help,

Chris

Go to the tech folder and read up! Also get a scangauge II it will give you a good idea of what's going on under the hood.

What you pay for it is going to be dependent on where you live. Both Kelly Blue Book & NADA have websites that will help you figure out what a fair price is for the truck. With that said, here are a couple of things to keep in mind when your looking at a used PSD equipped truck.

*White residue around degas bottle cap
*Color & condition of the coolant
*CAC boot condition
*EOT/ECT delta (would need something like a ScanGauge II to see this)
*FICM voltage (also need a ScanGauge)
*EGR cooler condition
*Oasis/CarFax report
*Cold starting issues?
*Hot starting issues?
*OEM bolts or studs (look for the bottom row of bolts/studs outside the rocker boxes)
*Aftermarket parts (intakes, exhaust, tuners)

Don't let anyone convince you these engines are junk...just the opposite. They're good engines, they just have demands/requirements by design. Your looking a $60-$70 oil change every 5k miles...fuel filters every 10k. Only run OEM spec filters (Ford, International, Racor) and fuilds. Aftermarket filters & parts don't usually work out too well in the long run for this engine. A 6.0L is more expensive to maintain, but generally will last longer than it's gas counterparts. The price difference in fuel comes out in the wash when you conciser efficiencies....but it's still too blessed high. You want to stay away from places that have a low sales volume (not price). If volume is slow, you stand a chance of getting crappy fuel. Some guys subscribe to draining the water out of the HFCM every month. I do mine every oil change, but I run 500+ miles a week...and buy fuel at a high volume truck stop. There is all kinds of information in the tech folder as well. Good luck and do you homework on this truck before you sign on the line.

I drive that exact truck with that mileage. Love it. Threw out the cat, EGR cooler and valve. Scangauge a major plus. All post previous to this one are spot on. If you're not gonna maintain it, DON'T buy it. Use the truck as a truck, if you're gonna drive it work it. But it's not a hotrod street machine. Headed out in the morning for 9 day huntin trip. Pulling 8K plus thru the AZ mountains. She loves to work.

had the same truck since it was new

2006 F350 SD 6.o diesel, crew cab, 4x, long bed, with a sneeker tow lift (weighs 1000lbs) mounted under bed, 85k. I tow cars daily and load the bed with construction landscaping materials all the time. I service it regularly, without hesitation on cost, and so far no major problems. As said all previous replies are right on. Take care of that truck and it will take care of you. If youre using it to work, I highly recommend it. Tires arent cheap and when one battery goes you have to replace both. But i spend sometimes 6hrs a day driving and its like a comfortable mobile office.
