Another 1996 5.8 cam question.

I'm building a 5.8 to put in my truck and Ive got almost all of the parts.
Is MAF and I'm looking to build a tourqe MONSTER, not a high reving dragstrip engine.

The parts that I already have are:
gt40 3bar heads
Typhoon intake
Ford Racing shorty headers which I know I'm going to get crap about but they flow better than stock and I can't get through inspection anywhere here with longtubes.
And I'm building a custom dual exhaust. (Dual from manifold to exit)

It's going to have a manual trans one way or the other. I dont expect the M5OD to last long but until I'm forced to swap in a ZF that's what I'll be running.

I'm having trouble choosing a tourqy cam for a MAF 5.8L

Thanks for all your advice in advance

There are others that know a lot more about the EFI stuff than I do, but something along these lines will net you lots of torque down low in the RPM band.

Well you just have me a good idea to submit this question to "Professor Overdeive" as well and compare everyone's advice.
Thanks

I'd just throw an "E" cam in and let her eat. With 33's you need a lot more gear.

That's the problem with the E cam.. it's not really a Torque cam.

My suggestion is the Comp 35-510-8 if you're really serious that you only want a 0-4000rpm powerband, if you would like even a little bit more go with the Comp 35-320-8.

Professor Overdrive is a complete moron when it comes to Fords. The stock F4TE cam boosted with full roller 1.7 rockers is a good-un.

Thanks guys.
I know I need more gear but I'm planning on upgrading to bigger axles front and rear so I don't want to waste any more $ on these ones.

All the cams that I've looked at, as well as these say that they require upgraded valve springs.
If I do go with stronger springs, aren't I going to have to run pushrod guides as well? Or will the GT40 springs suffice.

Guideplates are only required on heads with stud mounted rockers so no you don't need them with the matching springs for those cams.

You only need pushrod guides if changing rocker styles. The pedestal rockers are aligned with the valves via the channels under the (paired)rockers. The springs are kept in place via the valve guide bosses inside the springs. Sometimes, the only benefit of stronger springs is for controling the valvetrain in the upper rpms. Those cams may work fine with the stock springs in your application You mentioned not wanting a high reving dragstrip motor, so I assume you're not going to rev it past, what? 5 grand ? You could always upgrade the springs later (with the heads on the motor) and do the cam now. This operation only takes a couple hours at best and can be done with the engine in the truck and the heads in place.

Haha Yes, I usually never rev higher than 5000 RPM. I figured that they required different springs because the stock springs couldn't handle the extra lift.
I'm going to tear the head down to clean the valves and replace the seals anyway so I might as well replace them now it they actually need it.

I you do use aftermarket springs make sure the valve seals you select are compatable.. some of the larger/better seals don't fit inside the double spring sets.

I'm down to choosing a throttle body for my truck with the Typhoon intake. It requires a mustang style single bore TB. What size do you guys think I should get for my combo? There are so many different sizes for mustangs.

70mm is the biggest that will fit without boring the upper throat larger, but that's plenty for this application anyway.
