Cam hunting

Ok I'm working on my 360. I want to replace the cam and don't know which one to get.
The components I have are:
-stock heads
-performer 390 intake
-long tube headers
-600cfm vac. Sec. Holley

What I'm using the truck for is purely towing its a 75 crew cab 8ft bed 2wd. It ain't no hot rod nor will it be. With a T-18 and 4.10 gears I was thinking about running the Crower beast cam with the rpm range of 1200-5200. I doubt the truck will see the 5200rpm but don't know. I will do springs and lifters at the same time. Any better cam choice? I also understand that most chose their cam for the reason they did. What is gonna work best for my application?

Camshaft selection has a major part to do with compression. And since the lower compression of the 360 will limit you to what cam you should run. You can go larger but you won't have the compression to get the most out of that grind. Check to see what CR is recommended for the cam you are looking at.

checkout camquest it's software by comp cams .
they have a free version , you have to register but no problems there .
but you can flip between different cams and see what hp and trq you get . it's great for deciding what grind you want , only problem is you only can choose between comp cam brand cams , but you can simply pick a cam from another manufacturer with similar numbers

I would say something like the Comp XE256H, Lunati 62000, or maybe have one custom ground for your app. I haven't used them but Oregon cams is highly recommended by the members of the "other" FE forum for custom grinds. The owner Ken is very FE savvy.

ok so i checked out the camquest link and well..... it wasnt very helpfull at first but i didnt have alot of time to mess with it. the Comp XE cams look good but nothing is said about compression ratio. so im starting to lean towards the Comp more than the Crower cam now.

Talking CAMS

Here's a few cams I have used , the first one makes great torque down low and super mid range. Elgin E966P int lift .486 -- exh lift .512 -- duration at .050 int 204 exh 214 . The next one is a SUMMIT brand .533/.533 lift
int 216 / exh 216 . this one is a bit more agressive but very streetable good torque and power. As far as a cam for towing the Elgin would work well with your setup, Competition products has great prices on these and other cams. I have used Comp Cams 268H in 390's but may be more than what you want to tow with.
