fun shift solenoid problem today

alright guys this is for a 95 e4od tranny. i've been have hard shifts from 2nd to 3rd so i pulled some codes and the 2nd shift solenoid wasn't activating. i have a e4od in the shed that got toasted so i decided to pull the shift solenoid pack off of it to see how it looked.
this is the first time ive really dug into any part of the tranny except for a tranny swap i did about 5 months ago. removed all the bolts needed and couldn't get the dam thing off. looked around a bit someone said its a seal u just have to pop it a bit so that wasn't hard at all but then for that dang shift solenoid connecter.

if anyone has to do this be careful with it. . i read that it just takes a lot of pressure and u have tug at it a bit to get it out. ya i broke the solenoid connecter from the main wires internally. main reason i did it on a burnt tranny first. the shift solenoid connecter slides down through the valve body and u can wiggly and twist it to pull it out. do NOT try and yank it in case u break something.

plus these costing anywhere from $100 re-manufactured to $430 from the dealer. dont want to break one because im sure it could be sold to be re-manufactured so u can buy more parts.

just figured id share my experience

Hey that sounds like the time i tried replacing the pick up coil for my dizzy, I have a picture of the result

I took 2 long flat heads and was bending each shaft from the pressure, then i was getting pissed and just did a quick downward shove/fall/displacement of 200+lbs on 2 screwdrivers and BAM it broked... I bought a new dizzy...

Been there, done that. I learned to push in the tab at the very bottom of the connector. I was getting the code for the 2nd shift solenoid also. I did the following before making it as good as new. Filter, Drained TC, Two shift solenoids, MLPS,MLPS connector, VSS, Cleaned all connectors, Pulled wiring harness to transmission and checked resistance. Took it to a transmission shop, and they though it was electrical and they could not find a PCM.

My suggestion, First, get the engine happy to make the transmission happy. Correct any engine codes and go ahead and change the oxygen sensor if it has 40K on it. I prefer Motorcraft. Replace all the vacuum hoses. Wires, plugs, cap and rotor.

After six months I finally was at the only thing left which is usually quite reliable. The solution was repairing the PCM. Study this web site, print a packing page and keep one for you. Capacitors were cheep and start leaking with age and heat and they damage the printed circuit board. This company will test it first then let you know if it needs to be repaired or replaced then get your credit card info. MIne was $195 plus shipping and it solved my crazy shifting, random dying and it increased fuel mileage with great shift points. ECMTOGO.COM is the place.

A quote from their web site...
"Our specialized ECM/ECU repair service also applies to most FORD ECU models years 1985-95 all OBD-I. We have a specialized ECU finding service for units damaged beyond repair or those hard to find models. "

Selonoid pack

Not sure what year Ford moved a diode from the selonoid pack to the PCM. They changed the connectorshape on the selonoid pack so the correct one would be used. I THINK it was 1995 model.

is that the bunch of wires and connector on the side that sits right next to your cat, has the heatshield, etc? If so, I tried pulling mine a while back.. broke the tabs off of it, pried and pushed and pulled and then realized that it wasn't coming off in one piece and I gave up... end of story

ya errors thats the one. its easy to get to unbolt the pan then 10 bolts on the solenoid then u just have to try and wiggle the demon out. doing this is the only way i knew what that connecter actually went to
