give it a coat of rust converter before you put any paint on it, you'll be glad you did.

Doesn't look bad at all! Knock the loose scale off with a wire wheel, some rust converter and a couple cans of chassis black...good as new.

The one's that go on clear, immediately turn the rust black works very well, goes a long way, can be found in the paint dept at the big box DIY stores, I highly recommend it. It will convert even pinpoint rust left after sanding to a black inert surface that will not continue growing under primer or paint. It does nothing to unrusted metal. Follow directions allow to dry completely before overpainting. Use rubber gloves, it turns the iron in your skin black as well and doesn't wash off.
This is not the same as some of the high price paints sold as rust preventer.

I use stuff called Rust-Mort. I believe it's a 3M product. I've also used some stuff in an aersol can called Extend. Does the same exact thing as the Rust Mort, but I think you'll get a little thinner application. Not sure if it's as strong as the Rust Mort is, as Rust Mort will eat holes into your concrete if you let it drip!

Thanks for all the tips guys!!! I ordered this kit the other day to help me out with it. Frame Paint Kit - Frame Coater Kit - Stop Chassis Rust with KBS Coatings Now i think I will get some rust converter to go in between the rust removal and the paint steps.

Rust Mort is made by SEM a major pro auto finish manufacturer and available at O'Reily's. I also like Rustoleum rust converter available at Home Depot and Lowes, come in bottle or spray. Bottle goes a long way, you just wipe on a thin coat, just enough to wet the surface.
Also available as Krud Kutter Rustex available from Ace Hdwr. (least expensive I've found)
Another version is available from Locktite called Extend Rust Neutralizer.
2 8oz bottles should be enough to do a sanded frame, a qt. should do your entire truck.

See my post above: Locktite Extend is an equivalent product (as is Ospho).

Has anybody here tried KBS? Can we get a report?

I have used rust converters in the past, I believe that most of them are just phosphoric acid & a polymer compound to form a coating; they seem to do a good job. Any recommendations for further steps to finish a frame preservation after it is applied?

Thanks!

Mike
