Dunn,

Starting and dying sounds like O-rings... injector O-rings most likely. Is your fuel filter Black?

To the OP... need a scan tool. Pretty sure a buzz test will verify that the IDM is working. Almost sounds like a dead PCM if the IDM and ICP/IPR check out good. If it's oil, I'd be willing to bet the IPR might be stuck.

The one in the tank was black half way up the tubes. the one on the block is still red like new. Just replaced 4 mo. ago. but the shop said the old filter was black.

Black filters are usually oil in fuel... this normally means bad injector O-rings causing the dirty high-pressure oil to get into the fuel (3000psi vs. 60psi... makes sense) and contaminate the filter. They've been known to go bad enough to cause a no-start when warm because the warm oil is too thin to build good enough ICP to run.

Scott, you might be able to find a local FTE member with AE who can scan your truck and help you with reading what everything means...

Hi, my name is Bob. I'm suggesting you swap the IDM. If you have no one close by with a 7.3, maybe the dealer will take the IDM back if it doesn't work. That or give Swamps a call and see if they will send you one to try, its worth a shot.

Would it help to rather it up and try to start it to possibly eliminate some possibility. I know it can be bad for these engines, but I need to do something to try to eliminate the possibility of another bad cps.
