550+ hp 7.3 vs 550+ 6.4

Looking for opinions on which one you would get if it was possible to get a stand alone for a 6.4. For 10k I figure you can get a 6.4,tuner, and all the basics plus have a little extra for some fab work and still achieve 550+ hp vs dumping 10k into the 7.3 and getting close to the same hp. I'm just really bored in class and dreaming of my obs build to come when I graduate in the fall. What would you do if given the opportunity? I love the 7.3 but I also like what's being done with the 6.4 and see a little more reliable high hp in the long run.

It's easier to make power out of the other motors vs the 7.3.

I'll take a 7.3 anyday though. =)

the 7.3 will probably outlive the 6.4 making the 550 hp anyway. might take a bit more work to get there but its worth it

I've just been reading a lot of stuff on forums lately that have discussed what a PIA the 7.3 can be once it's north of 600. If there was a way to go CR with a 7.3 for cheaper I'd go that route. I love the sound of the 7.3 but after driving a tuned 6.4 for 2 weeks, it's kinda like crack! I'm addicted. But I have never been in a 500 hp 7.3 so I can't really get a true comparison.

In all reality, the new trucks are around 40k where you can get ours for around 7. thats 33k you can stick into a very reliable truck and make more power or the same. besides our trucks sound way better then the newer trucks. you can actually here the turbo. IMHO the 6.4 is only making more power due to the twin turbo. Im waiting for someone on here to slap a second turbo on a 7.3 and see how it turns out.

Yeah, I will build my 7.3 all day vs getting a 6.4. I too like the 6.4 and what is being done with them, but you have to look at the failures also. LOTS of cracked pistons out there in 6.4's along with cracked valve seats..

On the flip side, back in the day there were quite a few 7.3's out there with cracked blocks and thrown rods. Tuning has come a long way since then though and cracked blocks and thrown rods are becoming less and less common. The stock forged connecting rods are now good for about 600hp, above that it's a gamble. They may hold forever, may last 2 miles. Who knows.

If I had the choice to go to a 6.4 I'd take the truck and put a commonrail 6.7 cummins with 5.9. Pistons and twins. Too many issues with 6.4 to me. Its basically a glorified 6.0.

I'm just wanting to put one in an obs. I think it would be cool to have CR injection. (besides a cummins) just thinking about doing something unique. I love the obs style and could care less about a new truck. I would rather take the 30-40k and build one.

The only problem I see with swapping is being able to control it with out swapping the dash as well. It would be very cool though to have an obs with an 08-10 interior.

Jim from Rosewood diesel did twin turbos on his black truck. He also tried triples for a while. Check out his site. I think he's still got pics of it.
