Hey I'm also 20 but that doesn't matter... I know hams that were licensed when they were 11.
The test is easy, just have to find time to go and DO it! My trade is in telecom and I work on this land mobile radio kinda stuff all day, microwave systems, component level electronics repair. That's basically what the test covers in addition to knowing a bit of common sense like you don't need a kilowatt of forward RF power to contact someone halfway across town. For the 'technician' (US) or 'advanced' (Canada) classification license just a bit more electronics knowledge, know your resistor colour code, reactive (RLC) circuits - that's your basic theory for tuning or filtering signals, etc.
I order lots of Moto equipment, commercial and public safety grade, and once you spec a few $1800+ portables then the "amateur grade" equipment seems like a relatively low cost! Eg. Commercial VHF mobile running about $1200 compared to a 2M Amateur mobile usually less than $400 new.
These are the mobiles I got in my truck now, XPR5550 TRBO VHF 50 watter and a good ol' GTX LTR 15 watter on 800MHz (trunking systems)

CB vs Marine VHF
Folks don't let the prices of Amateur Radio equipment scare you. I'm sure with a little effort you can find very cheap prices for used gear to start with and you can even find some NEW radios amazingly cheap. Check out on line sites or talk to some hams in your community. Most HAM clubs have web sites that indicate Test dates and tell about regular club meetings as well. Brand new Wouxun Radio are very reasonably priced...yes they are made in China..but what isn't anymore.
By the way there are plenty of HAMS out there that enjoy being ELMERS to new prospective Ham Radio Operators. Elmers are volunteer advocates who help newbies get licensed and get on the air.

Somewhat related question. I am completely new to this and I am thinking of getting a radio to fit in my truck - I am looking for something that is CB compatible, to communicate with other road users (it will be used in outback Australia).
I have a couple of FRS handhelds already, that I would also like to communicate with, is there a vehicle device that will handle both?
