Auto to manuel hub hit a snag

So the kid and I are taking the auto hubs off his 94 f150 and replacing them with Mile Marker manuel hubs. Well I have not done hubs since I owned my 79 back in the mid 80's. Both MM and the Haynes manuel were some help but not the greatest. We got the pass side done and started in on the driver side when we discover the inner C clip on the spindle, for the auto hub is smashed up pretty good and we can't get the bugger out of the grove. Plus there seems to be more play or movement in the driver side spindle then the pass side had.

Any advice how to proceed in removing the buggered up C clip?

do you mean the snapring on the axle shaft or the big ring inside the outer edge of the hub?

both of which you "should" be able to get out with a small screwdriver and holding your tongue right

The C shaped washer that rides in a groove behind the auto hub assembly. I think it is specific to the auto locking hubs. Obviously there was a problem here because the other side was a pie of cake.

The best we could tell when doing the passenger side is the the splined spacer behind the c washer has to come out to fit the manuel locking hub. With it in there, there was no way you could get the snap ring or the big wire ring retainer on.

Yeah the spacers has to come out. Do you have the spindle nut socket? If so maybe back off the inside nut if it will fit over the spacers and see if it moves it enough you can get behind it to grab it with something

Yea, seems like the splined spacer is wedged too and really pushing against the C washer. We tightened up the lock washer, 4 prong dealy trying to relieve the pressure. Add when I say we I mean the kid was doing that while I was messing up a nice used 3G alt trying to re clock it. Hoping I do not find a bunch more damage but it WILL be coming out there tomorrow.

Instead of tightening that nut back it off, it might ouch the spacer and clip off enough from the backside to loosen it
