Tranny cover needed..Anyone used a fiberglass one?

I prefer a steel one but fiberglass is 1/2 the price! I would like some feedback.
Help me decide.

What's half the price? I have several good metals ones but with two holes in the middle for the shifter and parking brake.

PM or email me and we'll work it out.

I would be interested to know if the 'glas cover helps deaden noise? Depends if it's made thick or cheap, I guess.

I have a gift card from classic haulers and also want to call an see what they typically get for a core steering box. I have the one from my truck and they say they want them. So it might help with the cost.
$50 for the f/g and $100 for steel.

Don't sell your "core" steering box to them. If it's still in one piece and someone decent shape, you can get a lot more for it on CL or the HAMB. When I bought my 52 in mid-2000s, it came with several different parts, including an extra steering box. I took it to a local vendor that specializes in old Ford parts. I was very naive at that time without knowing what stuff was worth. He only gave me $25 for it. However, a few years later, I got him. I bought a very solid and complete 51-52 front clip from him for $400.

I wonder how much clean up time is needed and how the fit is on the fiberglass cover?

Jeff, unless you are in a hurry wait until spring when all the CL people will again be listing all those bigger trucks to be parted. Around here they stopped in the Fall and will start again soon. We always have a few F-6 or F-7's being parted. If you want, I'll email you when one comes up. chuck

My concern about a fiberglass cover would be fit problems. Those things aren't very famous for their perfect fit most of the time. In my mind, it would be easier to "persuade" a metal one to fit easier than a fiberglass one. Plus if you really cranked on it with one of the mounting screws, I would imagine you could easily break it.

It is still in one piece, meaning the shaft is not cut and all is still intact.

Maybe i need to get the "couch off my butt", and fix the one I have.(tranny cover)

I would like to see my steering box go to a good home. I just don't know where to get it seen... CL or HAMB ? I still am not a member over there.
I know alot of you guys are. I've been there, just looking in from the outside..

I bought mine from Be-Bops and it fits just fine. Besides, it's covered by carpeting. Unless you're really torquing it down, I doubt that you'll crack it.

That's good to know because I'll need one for my 50 F1 in the future, and I'm guessing I'll be making a trip down to Bebops for my fenders between now and then. That's if I don't crowd the hole with my replacement floor pans and end up having to persuade one to fit correctly.

Keep in mind, mine is on a 53. I'm not sure what the set-up looks like on an F-1.
