virus on FTE
i got that one from this site yesterday as well. had to do a system restore, but even that didn't work completely. it changes your file settings making many if not all files 'hidden'. do a search for 'unhide dot exe' for the solution to that after effect. to prevent, find a flash movie somewhere like you tube etc, right click on it and set flash global settings to 'ask me before allowing new sites from storing information on this computer'.
this was a nasty bugger but it is beatable without doing a windows reinstall

I am actually starting to worry that I HAVEN'T had a problem yet....Seems like everybody is...why am I NOT?
I think the virus protection companies come up with these and fire them off, when business is slow...

you got the same idea as me jeff ... i think they create their own and send them out then shortly thereafter here comes the cavalry !!!!!!!!!! not ....... nope i'm spending 12 1/2 hours a day at home in my big white binder , and visiting the wife and such for a couple of hours till i go back . just got hold of her old laptop as she got a new fangled thing called a notebook ?????? i'm still pedaling the mail 'round to various places and since they have discovered my routes bisect 2 or 3 others every time and the others no longer have midday runs they keep discovering new uses for the boss and me ...... mo' money , but no time for life !!!!!!!!!!

The repair guy that fixed mine suggested I switch to a Linux operating system to avoid such viruses in the future. What do you IT guys think about that, and how would it prevent this happening? I think I heard the guy say that the hackers aim their dirty work primarily at Windows operating systems. What say you? In plain English, please. Stu

Most viruses originate outside of the US. You cannot find them and you can do nothing about it other than to protect yourself as best you can. If they are new, they will get past your protection until they find out about it and install the block. Be sure you update your virus protection library every few days.
My understanding is that this virus placed the "buy the fix" ad so you would give then your credit card info. You know where it goes from there....
