Im relatively new to working with carbs. How bad can I screw things up while installing a kit?
Bad......... Seriously, parts can get lost, go flying into never never land, parts can get installed wrong and the list goes on. Like 46Yblock said above.
Now, if you have good mechanical skills, a place to work, tools and not easily intimidated, get a kit and carb cleaner and go for it. Tip, take detail pictures and understand the different fuel delivery systems in the carb and how they work.

could you be a little 'wordier' in your posts?
nobody is going to 'jump on you'.
you seem to keep homing back to carburetor.
did you plug up all vacuum lines to it?
yes, i think you can rebuild it yourself.
can you build a model kit?
do you build R/C cars?
is so rebuilding this carb is easier.
once it's clean you can do it on kitchen table.
yes do keep track of parts.
would your computer work if you left out hard drive?
same thing.
I may as well give it a try. If it doesn't go well I will pay someone to do it for me. I mean the worst that will come of this endeavor is me wasting 20 bucks on a rebuild kit. Thanks everyone.
