dont know where you are at but up in phoenix there were a couple of places with rangers that har the rearends in them. I think they went for around $400.
Now what engine are you planning to use because if its a big one, I am not sure the ranger rearend will hold up. Might want to ask the guys that are doing v8 swaps what they are using. or go over to the ranger station and look/ask there.

Don't know if you got this taken care of yet ,but the 9" rear from 72 and older F-100 , F-150 series will bolt in your 48 like it was made for it. It is the same width and stud bolt pattern, 5 on 5.5 , You will need to use the U-bolts made for the 9 " as it is larger in that area...... P.S It will handle a 460 engine with no problem.

swap rear
Hey thanks for all the info on the rear swap.I went to junk yard found a 72 f100 9 in. 5x5.Looked up the rear tag its 2.75 gears 9 in out of a 77 e-100,go figure,so here is another one that fits great ,no issues ,shocks mounted on 9 in rear stock, driveshaft bolt in,springs no problem, used 3in. hangers from junkyard, brakeline no issue, and the best part 69 mph,I can finally use first gear no issues, thank you for all your advice on this matter,I just put the old rear on craigslist, see what happens, thanks again

Nothing wrong with the other rear, the 9" just fits better and is stronger. My 79 F-100 had the 9" and i had a 460 in it. Heavy foot caused it to burn up the tires to quick,L.O.L..........So I traded it for a 94 ranger.
