Thoughts on a 95' F150 purchase..

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a 95 F150 XL Extended Cab 4x4 in my area. I live in western Washington. It has the 5.0L and is an automatic. It has 198k miles.

He's asking $3500. The price is in my budget, but the high miles worry me. The owner has kept documentation of practically everything that's been done to the truck, and had the tranny rebuilt in 09. Seems like it has been well maintained.

What do you guys think? Can I expect some more life out it?

Seem kind of expensive... unless the body is MINT then its about right. See if he will take $3250 I wouldn't pay more than $3000 though. You could expect about a 300 000+ m on these trucks if well maintained.

Yeah pictures would help. But an XL isn't likely to have any power options as it is a base model truck. That on top of the mileage would be a good bargaining chip. The trans rebuilt is a plus, but check to see if anything is leaking on the truck, i.e. engine, steering, rear diff...

I got 285,000 miles out of my old 5.0. It was still running good, and used 1 qt of oil every 5000 miles. It also had a hard life.

the 96 f150 4x4 i had in high school had 230k extremely abusive miles, was run out of oil multiple times, and was used as a plow truck and it's still going to this day. they will be (for the most part) very dependable trucks. 3500 is pretty steep. offer him 2500 and see if he'll compromise.

another note, my 87 f150 4x4 that i sold a month ago had 262k miles on it and it still ran good (even with a bad head gasket).

I'd offer 2700 cash and see if he bites. Money talks, no checks to clear or headaches. Records are the life story of the truck, it sounds like this may be one to pursue because of that fact. I did the "less is more" thing with my 81 Chevy C20 Custom deluxe. To hell with that! Vinyl seats are never a good thing, manual locks are annoying, and no A/C in july makes the vinyl even worse.

I had a 87 F150. regular cab, 4x4, shortbed. It was a XLT Lariat, had all the crome, ac, tilt, all the things found in a XLT Lariat. But It had a 4 speed trans, manual locks, windows, trans shifter, and manual hubs. Only truck I have ever seen like that, I have talked to people on here that have the same setup on their 87.

Yeah, I dont really mind the manual locks/windows and stuff.

The body is in good shape, and I like the fact that he has alot of the records/receipts.

My main issue is on the engine, and how much longer it will last on me.
