i have a 1990 f-250 4x4 with a 351w. i am re-building the engine and would like to do away with all the smog stuff and heat tubes or whatever the things are coming off the exhaust manifold . will getting rid of this stuff make any problems for me or effect the way the computer reads it to make it run right ?
i yanked mine off my 87 with a 4.9 and my 93 with a 460 and my 91 with a 460... both seem fine, no computer hiccups, the idle just got a hair rougher, but i didnt care.
Just be sure to plug ALL holes, and take care of any loose vacuum lines
I believe he is referring to the EGR that hurts mileage. I've heard it goes both ways. I am in the process of removing the smog pump with a delete bracket. I replaced my EGR with a new one on my LTs. I didn't pay any attention to mileage, when it gets low I fill it up. Thats part of driving so why worry about the numbers.
I took all those tubes off the manifold, then just welded the holes shut. I got rid of all the emissions stuff also, EGR and all. I gained at least 1 mpg.
do you have to use a delete bracket when you remove the smog pump ?
I have read that you can just use a shorter belt, but some claim it causes undue stress on other pulleys and can slip off. So I bit the bullet and ordered the Ford Racing delete bracket.
If you have any emissions inspections in your area you may have problems with that. If nearby places have emissions inspections it will hurt you trying to sell the truck someday.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I like to breathe clean air.
If you ever go visit a big city in a country where there are NO emissions controls on their cars and factories, you might come back with a different appreciation for what the EPA does for us here.
