I like your project. I have a '57 that I'm trying to decide which to use; a mod motor/aod or a 292 I have, hooked to an aod. What bellhousing/adapter did you use?
I like the "Rams-Horns" too.

Hi Steve,

The Rams-horns are from Mummert. HOME*********************** Y

$349 is a fairly good deal considering that before they were available, some original (rusty, cracked) rams-horns went for over $600 on ebay from time to time!!!!

Bentsen adapter. Transmission Adapters

They're not cheap but it's the only game in town... I think I paid about $800+ for it. It does fit nicely but it requires you to go from the standard truck mounts to a side mount system and rear/trans-tailshaft mount.

I'm still building mine. I have some pictures which I'll post in a couple of days.

I chose an E4OD since they're used up to and including the F450 and behind the 300(6), 302, 5.4 V-8, V-10, 460, 7.3L Diesel, etc.....

Mine came out of an F-450 diesel. I had a transmission guy build me a trans using the trans-case from a SBF/300-6 using all the heavier duty parts for a diesel including the rear-mounted parking brake that came in the F-450 and motor home chassis' (The F-600 doesn't have parking brake provisions in the rear brakes)

I'll also add that I am sticking with the 292 because it'll look "right" under the hood and more importantly, It'll SOUND "RIGHT" too.

If I didn't use the Y-block, I would probably use an EFI 300-6

Regards,

Rick

Hoping to bring this thread back to life and get a picture of the custom mounts HT32 made for the side of the Y block to frame rail installation.

Since Y-Blocks came in mid '50s F-100s, bolt right in and function perfectly, I can't imagine why anyone would convert one to side mounts. That's probably why there aren't any responses.

56 Ford F-100 stock manual 4 speed transmission 272 Y blocks changed over to AOD with 292. Tail shaft of Aod to the front of the Y block is a long way. Since the manual transmission bell housing no longer mounts to the main xmember of the frame, there is no where to support the engine or transmission except the tailshaft of the AOD and the front motor mount of the Y block. It rocks back and forth like a rocking horse. When making this swap, its necessary to make other arrangements to support the engine somewhere closer to the middle where the stock motor mounts once held the bell housing on each side. Y blocks are often mounted in the middle on both sides to the frame rails. Since the blocks are already drilled to recieve motor mounts in that location, that would be a logical place to start.

That is a good reason. Try looking at outright engine swaps for ideas. All of the popular swap engines use side mounts. While all are not the same, the general method will be the same.

I have a cross member in my 60 that uses the side mounts, I built it when I put a 390 in it, using the same mount afterwards when I went to a 223 six and a Y will bolt right in also. I built it from a 57 Ford passenger car mount, welded a piece of angle on each end and bolted to the frame. This was pre internet times and I fabbed what was needed. But today you can buy a ready made bolt in cross member with the mounts.. Places like Summit, Jegs has them, also with a trans mount cross member..

Says for FE but Y uses the same..

Thanks Hiball, I did not realize anyone had responded. Im supposed to be notified by email, but I guess I dont have it set up that way. I have in the past. So the Jegs cross member mounts you made reference to are for transmissions, not y block side engine mounts, correct? As far as transmission mounts, I already got one for the AOD, but it mounts way at the rear of the tailshaft. Too far back to stabilize the transmission and engine somewhere in the middle.

NO, what I posted is the cross member for the engine, not the trans. This cross member allows you to install a Y with side mounts.

Going back and looking at those links, not sure how I did not get that the first time. Thanks for being patient and pointing that out, AGAIN. So do FE engines and Y Blocks have the same side mount patterns?

Basically yes, all Ys were the same. FE changed the block mounting area in 1965 but 58-64 were the same as Y as is the 223 six. One difference is the motor mount to cross member, In 59-64 they used a single stud, earlier had double stud. If you use this cross member it will require the 59-64 single stud mount, they will bolt to any Y..

So I got the Y-Block adapter from Transdapt thru Jegs. I have two questions. Does the "U" section of the stock Y Block mounts face the front of the engine or the rear of the engine? Second, the instructions state the motor mount provided must be used with an oil pan from a car, not from a truck. How do I tell the difference between a car and truck oil pan?

Open side of the U goes towards the rear.

Truck pan is rear sump ( deep end of the pan at rear )

Car pan is front sump. ( deep end of pan to the front )
