Frame Coatting What would you use??

So I was in the process of doing a frame off restoration for the past year or so. I had everything off once cleaned it up the best i could using a flap disc. I sprayed everything with a rust proof primer to hold me over. The more i look at it the more it annoys me. I live in the salt belt and lets face it. With in 2 years if that the frame will start rusting again.

SO...... The new plan is to re strip the frame of everything. Go out and buy a massive air compressor and sand blasting tank and go to town on the frame. The question is is what should I use to coat it.

POR 15
KBS Coating
Roofing Tar
Primer, primer, paint

what would you guys suggest???

On my 66 mustang Im restoring Im using chasiss saver which is alot like Por 15 from what Ive heard. I have already coated the whole underside and it looks decent. I dont live in the salt belt though so there may be something better.

i remove the rust flake with a pressure washer, then give the frame a good spraying of phosphorous acid out of a weed sprayer set is mist mode. once it dries i give a good coat of rustoleum red oxide primer, followed with 2 or 3 good coats of rustoleum industrial gloss black paint. the last one i did was 3 years ago, and it looks like i just did it.

I just got done sandblasting and painting my 99 F550 frame. Used POR 15 as a Primer and tractor Supply Lo Glare Black as a Top coat. The POR15 will prevent the rust and the TSC paint will protect the POR and give the correct sheen on the frame and is Easy to touch up. I topcoated because the Cab-n-chassis frame gets more sunlight and the POR gets funky looking when exposed to sunlight. A pickup would probably be fine

yeah back when my grandpa was alive he would coat the frame with used motor oil. whether or not that was a good idea i dont know but i guess in theory it would repel the water

Oil would work great, but who wants that nasty stuff to smell all the time!

I went with tremclad rust primer, and 3 or so coats of tremclad. Im sorta doing a budget type build (for fun sake) and hindsight I think I would have used por 15, then topcoated with tremclad. Por15 protects pretty well, I think it would protect better then tramclad alone.

I completely agree! My '92 f150 is still looking good on the underside from when my trans front pump seal blew out 5 months ago. For my resto projects, I am a big fan of chassis saver, with an epoxy top coat.

Any of those rubberized or rocker guard products will get chipped and start rusting underneath so stay away from that.

POR15 has trouble sticking to bare metal, it is meant to be applied to light rust. A lot of times when applied to clean sanded or blasted steel will chip and peel in time.

I would go with the phosphoric acid followed by a good TWO PART enamel over cleaned metal. If you blast the entire frame a TWO PART epoxy primer followed by a top coat of whatever you like.

Single stage paints arent going to be as resistant to spills, rock chips, or rust.

If you want to stop it forever chassis saver or similar. If you want to coat it with an oil and basically not have to worry about it for a long time-buy a product called fluid film. It is not motor oil, its some kinda thick, nasty greasy kinda of product you can spray on and it will not come off without some kinda of assistance. I coated all kinds of stuff with it, no rust.

OR

Go to home cheapo, buy some rustoleum rust converting paint and a few cans of satin black paint. Clean off as much rust as you can by hand, then spray the rust converter on, then wait and spray on the satin. I did this to a severely rusted toyota frame and maybe 1 small spot of surface rust come back.
