My steering wheel sounds like a cat moan.....

I have a moan, kinda sounds like a cat moaning , whenever I turn my wheel lock to lock.

Is there a bearing in there that could be greased or something?

As I understand it, that is very typical of our trucks. Mine has done that for 3 years now. You can try to flush and refill it, that helped mine some. Make sure you don't use power steering fluid. (double check your manual for recommendations) I put power steering fluid in mine, and it got really weird. I then did a complete flush and refill.

Mine makes a 'squeaky door hinge' sound every once in awhile, it sounds like it is coming from just beneath the steering wheel. Would flushing and changing the ps fluid help this too? Seems like I need to grease something on the top of the steering column to fix this.

Go get three quarts of Mobil1 Syn ATF and flush it out. It will quiet it down.

Clarification:

The noise is definitely IN the cab of the truck, like under the dash...

Your not crazy. I have experienec this too. Mainly when it is cold out, but I wouldnt mind to find a fix for it. I have looked under there for possible places to grease but havent taken any actions yet

Jay...you might try to find where something is rubbing and hit it with some silicon spray.
What Joe was speaking of is the groan that these P/S pumps usually make. Sounds like the old ones when they were low on fluid. And yes, it is typical for these trucks.

The "moan" will travel through metal, which is why it appears to be inside the cab. If you get water in the P/S pump you'll definitely hear it. Or if you run the pump low. Best thing to do is flush & fill the system with Mobil 1 Syn ATF.

Yes I had this same squeek. It is the bushing where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. I put some wheel bearing grease on mine and havent had a squeek in 6 months.

There is an additive which can be added to the power steering fluid. Off hand I can't remember the name, it was a motorcraft product and was only a couple of ounces. A friend of mine had it and put it in at least 3 years ago and I haven't heard a noise since.

Yep -- it takes ATF. Look in your Owners Manual -- it specifies Mercon ATF.

Mine made the same sound. It comes from the rubber boot around the steering shaft, where it goes through the firewall. I used a SMALL flat blade screwdriver, and packed some white grease between the shaft and the seal on the boot. Be careful not to damage the boot or seal. Hasn't squeaked in almost 5 years. I attacked the boot from inside the cab.

I think it is the bearing at the firewall. I will report my results.

Reps to you all.
