5.0 VS 6.2 - My New Tow Pig
#16
If I personally were in your shoe's I would look long and hard a 6.2L Powered F-250.
They can be had for cheaper than a 6.2L F-150 and have more capability. (The cheapest 6.2L powered F-150 starts at around 46,000)
The 5.0L is a great engine as well...I own an FX4 Supercab F-150 with the 5.0L myself. I've only towed once with it...It was around 5500lbs...And it towed that wonderfully. I've never towed with the 6.2L...Only driven one unloaded, so I can only suspect that the 6.2L will tow a little better than the 5.0L.
Both 5.0L and 6.2L are great engines...But I personally think a 6.2L Powered F-250 would best suit your needs.
Anyway
Goodluck!

I'll agree with everyone else. Based on the loads you're trying to pull, you need an F-250/350. Stick with the one you have, buy a new one with the 6.7 (do NOT buy a 6.0 or 6.4), or buy a new one with the 6.2 gasser and be prepared for the fuel bill - it's going to drink gas, especially when towing.
Large-displacement V8s are wonderful, but if you're towing a considerable amount, a turbocharged diesel is the only way to go.

Well I got pricing on 3 trucks:
2012 F150 Lariat 6.2L CC 6.5' 4X4 3:73 Max Tow Package - Most Expensive
2012 F250 XLT 6.2L CC 6.5' 4X4 3:73 - $2000 Less Than Above
2012 F150 XLT 5.0L CC 6.5' 4X4 3:73 HD Payload Package - $5000 Less Than Lariat
The 6.2L F150 has a tow rating of 10,900
The 6.2L F250 has a tow rating of 11,900
The 5.0L F150 has a tow rating of 9,300
I plan on keeping this next truck at least 10 years. I would rather have the Lariat for comfort in the long run and given the better mileage the 6.2L F150 will get over the F250, I'm swaying more towards the F150. All three trucks exceed the maximum I will be towing.
Opinions?

Have you test driven these vehicles? I'd hate to see you in an F150 and regret not getting the superduty. I personally don't even see that Lariat 6.2 as a possibility. I'd kick myself in the butt if I paid MORE for a LESS capable truck.
Lastly, that 5.0 should have HUGE discounts, so when looking at prices don't just go off of Ford.com.
Good luck and post pictures when you make your decision.

The prices I have are actual quotes from local dealers.
I have test driven the 5.0 F150, 5.4 F150, Ecoboost F150, and 5.4 F250. All were very nice trucks and seemed to have very good power. I cant see the 6.2 F150 being a disappointment.
I have towed well over the factory rated max towing/payload capacity with my 1995 7.3L and have towed/payload right up to the max of my 1999 5.4L Superduty. Both have performed to my satisfaction. Only reason for getting rid of my 1995 is the high maintenance cost of the diesel, and the unreliability it has become due to its age.
To me its worth paying $2000 more for the Lariat to only loose 1000lbs of max towing capacity, and to not have the "rental car like", cheap looking interior of a base model XLT F250.
Has anyone here even towed close to the max rating of their F150?

The payload is the limiting factor more than the tow rating. Check to see how much actual payload you have left on that Lariat. With that big 6.2 in there I'll bet you will be maxed with only your trailer hanging on the hitch and no passengers or other cargo. The HD 5.0, even with less tow rating, will have more ability but I would not consider that engine for that much towing.

Hmmm, why is a redblooded man trying to talk himself out of a superduty and into a half ton...?
As far as gas mileage goes I'd say just forget it. The only viable option here appears to be the 6.2 and at that point you just need to forget about what you'll be spending on fuel and just get the truck you want/need.
But don't listen to me, I don't tow too often.
