Hi, my new project is a 1960 f100 4x4. My dad was driving a while back and the axle snapped on him.Ever since then the truck has just been sitting. The truck is running so I really want to find a new rear end. I don't know if any of the other years had the same axle if so I could just switch my gears into a new housing or even better yet just find a rear end with the right gear ratio. Do any years switch over like that? My question is, do you know of any good spots where there is a ford truck graveyard around somewhere near me where i could scavenge some parts or any other ideas you have. I live in Columbia Falls mt. Or even if i could get one shipped to me that is relatively close. As far as I have heard they are pretty rare. My gear ration is 3:89.

 

3.89 is a common rear end for the 1/2 ton trucks. pull the axle shaft and see if it is the rear end or is the axle. Sat I found a 60 f100 4x4 in junkyard in showlow az at ShowLow Wrecking yard. if it is the axle, then they are easy to come by with a little patience. Find out if you have the 2 pin or 4 pin rear end. You want to convert to 4 pin

Why convert to 4 pin? The axle shaft isn't hurt at all.

 

because that is where the third member usually fails on a 2 pin

 

Don't feel bad, my dad used to burn rubber with my truck too. I think it was his second childhood, or maybe payback.......I'm with the upgraded axle. Sometimes the old adage 'they don't make 'em like they used to' is a good thing.

You need an axleshaft. I gave you the applications, said that right/left is the same and has 28 splines.

 

The housing around the axle shaft literally snapped in half. The axle shaft is fine.

 

Also which years had the same axle housing, so if i can find one with or without gears I can just put mine in it if i need to.

 

As the F100 had the Ford 9 inch in non limited slip applications, one from 57 to 60 would definitely fit, as would the corresponding Dana axle with limited slip from those years. It is also said that a 9 inch from an F100 through 68 would also fit. The big thing is that the spring pads on the replacement axle be the same distance apart as the old one and the end to end dimension be close to the same.

It is not too common for an axle tube to break, but I have seen it happen due to too many oferloads over time.

 

As number dummy said 57-67 9 inch rear axles will fit. I would look for 1/2 ton 2WD or 4Wd. only real difference is gear ratio which can be changed. Too bad you aren't closer I gave my 9 inch from my 59 4x4 to a friend. You might check Freeman Auto in Montana they have alot of older parts. Also I see a gentleman from Reygate MT has been trying to sell 57-60 truck parts for a while on e-bay or craigslist. He had some 4x4 parts for 59-60. Let us know what you find.

 

So 57-67 will just bolt on and fit minus the fact that the gears may have to be changed? Or will the spring pads have to be changed? I would really like to get the exact same part to keep it 100 percent stock original.

 

I put a '63 in my '60 but had to change the shock mounts. It took a little cutting and pasting but it all looks great now!
