Which thermostat?
Hi, i'm back again!
Which thermostat do i need, long or short stem? I replaced the water pump a while back and got the thermo at a parts store. It quit, put it in water on stove nothing changed. From the top of the housing to the top of the pipe inside it is an 1 1/2". My truck is a 1995 F350 7.3 PSD.
I have read so many things, i'm confused as to what i need. I don't always trust the guy behind the counter, have gotten wrong part more than once.
Thank for you help, again

Hi, I'm back again!
I went to my local ford dealer to get thermostat. I asked if it was a long or short stem. The 2 guys at parts counter did not have a clue what i was talking about. I tried to explain it to them. He said,Ma'am i'm not saying you don't know what you are talking about, but i've never heard about the change in the water pumps on the 95's. So, finally agreed to order one for a 95 and one for a 96. As of now all i know for sure is that both are 195 deg. and have different parts numbers.
I am going to copy the article i read about this and take it to ford tomorrow!
Thanks
Shannon

I had a similar thing happen to me in Autozone a while back.
When in asking for a Fuel Filter for my F350 and they kept giving me an air filter.
I got mad and told them that it wasnt the part, they bring out the manager and he also claimed the air filter was a fuel filter.
Stopped going to Autozone after that, lost my hope in them.

The '94.5-95 takes a short stem thermostat and the '96-97 takes a long stem thermostat.
Also, the '94.5-'95 short stem thermostat is 203*, not 195*. The long stem t-stat on the '96-97 is a 195*.
You cannot use the long stem 195* on the early build unless you change to the late model water pump. Also, you cannot change to the short stem 203* on late models unless you change to the early model water pump.
There are aftermarket temp t-stats available for the long stem '96-'03. Available temps are 180*, stock 195*, and 203*. The 180* t-stat comes from Joey at Terminator. The 195* is stock from Ford. The 203* comes from Bob @ Dieselsite.

How long was the stem on the t-stat you took out of the truck? If you ordered another pump for a '95 when you changed it, you should have a short stem pump.
The bottom disc on the t-stat goes down and closes of the bypass hole in the pump, so if the bypass is only 1 1/2" down in your pump, I think it's going to be a short stem. Best thing to do is measure the short stem t-stat you got and make sure it will close off that bypass hole.
If you look at the pic that Jim posted above, you will see how the long stem t-stat looks and how long it is. Measure your old t-stat and if it's shorter than what Jim posted, it's a short stem.

It sounds like you need the short stem. If you put the long stem in the pump, the bottom disc would hit inside the pump and wouldn't drop down all the way to seat the top disc in the groove of the pump. Plus you had a short stem in it before and it was working fine right?
The t-stat not only controls coolant temp, but also directs coolant flow through the engine. As the thermostat OPENS it will close the bypass. So, when the t-stat is fully open, the bypass is mostly closed to direct coolant to the radiator and not through the bypass back through the engine. So, when the t-stat is closed, the bypass is open allowing coolant to flow back through the engine, not to the radiator. If you install a long stem t-stat in a short stem pump, the bottom disc would block the bypass I would think.. I've never tried to do it before.

got hot
Hi All, I'm back again
I put the new thermostat in and no leaks any where. Drove around 3 or 4 miles, all seemed good. So today started for town and she got hot (up to the "L")! Stopped and coolant was coming out of the radiator fill/over flow tank! Let her cool down and got home (all down hill). noticed the rubber seal on cap hanging out. It's broke. Is that my problem?http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...lies2/sad2.gif
