4x4 hub, need help!

So the other day, went for a ride in the woods in the snow, got stuck out there cause 4x4 wasn't working, my front right hub wasn't engaging. It has done this to me before one time, but after cycling the **** a few times, it engaged, no such luck that day. Today it was warm outside, I went and cycled the hub, it engaged freely for the most part. Popped the cover off and as I was thinking, it was full of water. It froze when it was cold out, preventing it from working.

I checked the seal on the outside cap, it was good. Popped the hub out, then the first nut and washer, and a mass of shredded stuff came out after that. My question is, what am I gonna need to fix this, do I gotta remove the next retainer nut?

It looks like your spring broke, and you have water as well. I did this job during the summer on one of my hubs. Get any water out of there, clean up the parts/replace, (works well with mineral spirits) re-grease the hub and components, and put it back together. I might have forgotten if you need to do any more disassembling. Also, I'd check the inner seal on the hub. In that case, you will need to do more disassembling.

If the seal on the hub is good, I would suspect the inner wheel seal is bad. Yes, you will need to dissasemble the rest of the way to check. Take a good look at the bearings. Also check the outer u-joint on the axle. if its bad it can tear up hubs, seals and bearings easliy.

If it were me, I'd tear it down like Archion recommended on both sides. A little PM goes a long way.

Ah yes, the spring! It's been so long since it's been apart, I couldn't' remember all what was in there, it must be the spring! I will have to tear the rest of the thing apart, I think am going to have to do the wheel bearings and seals as well, the truck definitely has a whirring sound coming from that front right, more so when I go around corners. I am assuming that I can only acquire that spring at the junk yard....

I had replaced the original ones with warn hubs! One of them blew within two trips out into the woods. I took off the rest of the hub today, check out my spindle! Not sure If I am gonna have to go and get another spindle or not.... Also picked up new inner and outer bearings, and the wheel seal.

This is before I cleaned it up:

And after a good rub down, not sure if I need another one or not.

Looks just like mine when I took it apart. Even had the pitting. How are your races?

That definitely does not look good. Can you get it honed back smooth? I don't know if they make oversized bearing to compensate for the amount taken off... You may want to get a new spindle just to play it safe.

I didn't check the races for the bearings, but basically my bearings looked like the inside of my hub in the first picture, fully of muddy brown water and dirt. I'll check them out tomorrow when I have light again. I may call up the junk yard to see how much a spindle would be. Not really sure if I wanna replace it though, this truck maybe sees 50 miles a year, and it will be getting a SAS eventually!

It's a real PITA to look these up in the parts catalog, but there are at least 11 variations listed for 1980/89 all FoMoCo light trucks & vans.

Easiest thing to do is look them up on a parts store's web site, see if they're the same part numbers for different years.

I just went and checked autozone, they don't even offer brand new spindles, perhaps NAPA! Maybe LMC would be a good place to look as well!
