1952 F-1 VIN color codes

Hi all,
Just brought home a nice original F-1 with the OHV 6. Anyway, the VIN tag in the glove box says SS under color. Where can I find what SS stood for? I'm comfortable saying it was green of one shade or another but wanted to make sure how it left KC. Thanks,
Howard

Welcome to FTE

SS = Special Paint

The original purchaser special ordered the truck because he/she wanted it painted a color that Ford didn't offer. When this occurred, you have SS listed under color on the Rating Plate.

If it's a shade of dark green, it could have been ordered by the US Department of the Interior, National Parks Service, US Forestry Service.

All the trucks that Coca-Cola purchased were painted Coca-Cola Red, will have the SS paint code.

Ditto trucks ordered by the USN, USAF, USMC, USA, USCG, because all were painted colors specific to each branch of the service, will have SS codes.

You hit the nail on the head. It's a US Park Service truck. Still has decals on it and the sticker on the dash telling the driver that if he is caught with a passenger, he could lose his job. Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

I asked a moderator to move your thread to the 1948/56 forum.

Since you're a you may not be aware that you typed this thread into the 2009 + F150 forum.

Good for me, not so good for you, cuz you won't get much help from peeps that own these newer trucks, with...at least one exception.

Thanks. Yes, I was floundering around, could not find how to begin a new thread. Still not sure. I saw the tab under the 2009 line and jumped on it. Appreciate the help. Howard

1952 F-1 newbie question

VIN tag is mounted inside the glove box door. Is that standard for this model? I guess I figured it to be inside the door post on the cab. I need to find an owners and service manual soon. Thanks.

That's the normal place for the serial number rating plate. It should start F1R2 and a string of 5 numbers if a V8.

You need a shop manual - available at most old truck retailers or on ebay. 1949-51 w/ 52 supplement is what you're looking for. It has all the service schedules, r & r, specs, etc.

Correction...

Serial number should start F1R2 then two letter for the production plant and then the string of 5 number no matter if a V8 or OHV 6.

Welcome to the forum! Glad to have another 52 with a 215.

Please post pictures of your truck and update your location in your User CP section at the top of the page. If you can't post pictures, email them to me at modelking2000 at hotmail dot com and I'll post them for you.

Except being equipped with a 215 6, the VIN would start with F1D2, not F1R2, then the two letter assembly plant code followed by the consecutive unit number. Not to be picky or anything.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).
