Found turbo fin damage - a few questions

Put a Ford AIS kit on this morning and I noticed the very tips of my turbo fins are damaged. I know this is bad but I was hoping to pay off the truck this year before any major repair costs. My question is can I run it like this for a while or is it catastrophic problem?

Did you check the wheel for play?

Can you post a pic?

A good pic or vid will help judge the severity. As long as it doesn't look like this!

Damage is much less than that. I'll check for play a little later. So if there is no excessive play is it ok for a while?

Really it is not that big of a job to rebuild it. You can easily remove the turbo, rebuild it, and reinstall on a Saturday. If you picked up a rebuild kit for $90 and a new wheel for $100-$120 you can get out pretty cheap really.

Riffraff Diesel Turbo Journal Bearing Kit

Riffraff Diesel Compressor Wheel

Here is a video showing how the journal bearings that are worn can cause the play.

I know just being a cry baby! My wife s mad I bought he truck a few months ago so I'm trying to get by without any major expenses until I get it paid off. I think the pedestal / ebpv is leaking oil so I will do all very soon. Is the drp in cassette riffraff sells the easiest for building he turbo?

I'll post some pics soon. Thanks

When I was jet mech in the Corps we used to "blend" the blades on compressors that had minor FOD damage. That possible on turbos? Seems the same type of deal to me.

Pictures would be nice. I just boogered up the nut on a prefect wheel. Went to loosen it up but didn't take the housing off first. Stupid mistake. I was changing from early to late model turbo and putting a WW on the new turbo. Anyway they are very easy to rebuild and cheap with Clay's kits.

Checked the turbo at the housing. The compressor spins smoothly and there is no play in/out, left/right. Looks like I just ingested some FOD at some point.

you can but it may be out if balance and can make the wheel rub the housing and then more money to fix it and maybe junk going in to the motor.

You can pick up a used compressor wheel pretty cheap from the guys that go with the wicked wheel. I would look into that if it were me. Then you need to figure out what it was that went through the intake to do that!
