ID This Quick Please!

Found this laying in water jacket behind the thermostat on my son's 200ci six. I didn't see it yesterday and not rusted. I'm guessing oil galley plug, but how did it get in water jacket?

Freeze plug. Someone probably replaced them at one time, and that one got knocked in, and couldn't be retrieved.Good thing you found it

Engine hasn't been coming up to temp all winter so very little heat. Hoping it was sticking thermostat open. Bothers me that it's not rusted, looks more like oil deposits on it. Guess I'll stick it back together and see what happens.
